The group is comprised of the seven federal medals and one VFW medal of Merle Benjamin West, who served in the United States Navy from the 1920′s through the Second World War. These medals are comprised of West’s named Navy Good Conduct Medal with full wrap brooch and officially hand engraved on four lines “Benjamin Merle West 1926″. The medal has two bars for subsequent awards, one officially engraved “1935″ and the other officially engraved “1938″. Both are officially hand engraved on the reverse “Merle Benjamin West”, indicating that West’s first and middle names were switched the medal planchet. The group further includes the U. Navy Yangtze Service Medal, full wrap brooch, with the edge numbered M. 3120″; American Defense Medal, slot brooch, with Navy “Fleet bar; American Campaign Medal, crimp brooch; European Campaign Medal, crimp brooch; Pacific Campaign Medal, crimp brooch; and the WWII Victory Medal, slot brooch. Also included is a 9 pace ribbon rack, circa 1980′s, which displays the ribbons for the seven federal medals as well as the Navy Commendation Ribbon (which had no medal) and the ribbon for the Philippine Liberation Medal which West likely never actually received. The ribbon for the Yangtze Service Medal has had fading of the yellow stripes to an almost white color. The group includes old index cards on which are typed West’s service record. The medals are all in excellent condition. Research has found that Merle Benjamin West was born 30 June 1901 and died 25 February 1989. His enlisted service number was 385 09 42, and his CWO2 number was 342617. He received his commission on 18 January 1944, with seniority from 15 December 1943. His original enlistment date was 8 April, 1919, and he transferred to the Fleet Reserve on 10 March 1939, then being “Reactivated” on 9 May 1941. At that time he joined the crew of the attack transport “USS Heywood” (AP-12 / APA-6) on 27 May 1941. He spent most, if not all, of WWII aboard the Heywood, which was involved in patrols in the Atlantic and the landing of U. Marines in Iceland, then moving to the Pacific where it was involved in combat operations which included Guadalcanal. The Heywod received seven battle stars for its actions in World War II. NAMED US Military Bronze Star Medal and Ribbon. Name inscribed / attributed to on back Kenneth D. Smith this was framed along with his Combat Infantry Pin (separate listing), but the condition of the shadow box was not all that nice. This listing is more aimed for those who seek to preserve history almost lost to time. Now found within the folds of modern marketplaces, I attempt to find as much information about their service, along with photos, obituaries, any other information pertaining to the individual. May God bless those past and present who sacrifice so much for us, and may their sacrifice never be in vain. Here is an Army Good Conduct Medal that is named to Phillip C McManus. He was born on October 26, 1924 in Pomona, California. He lived in California, going through middle, high, to Junior/Community College before registering for the draft on December 20, 1942, volunteering around June of 1943 (Progress-Bulletin), and officially enlisting on September 28, 1943. He found himself in the Air Corps Reserves in Sheppard Field Air Corps Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. The base conducted basic training in eight different schools of the Air Corps including Glider Mechanics School, but the primary focus was to train Aircraft Mechanics. McManus was then stationed at Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado in 1944 (Progress-Bulletin) which used to be an Air Force military base. At the time of his discharge he held the rank of Sergeant with the specialty of Airplane Armorer Gunner, to which he made inspections and repairs on aircraft armament such as bomb release mechanisms, cannons, guns, equipment, and more. He was part of a bombardment group, but the quality of his DD212 & Discharge Certificate is so poor, it’s hard to tell what it could be. The paper trail effectively ends there. His Army Good Conduct Medal. Replacement Ribbon Bars American Camp. Copy of his DD212, Discharge Certificate, & VA Benefits Documents. Copy of all documents pictured. The medal is in good condition, has a circle marking from an adhesive tag. The ribbon has a bit of wear too.

This is an exceptional WW1 War Service medal award by the Sons of the American Revolution to a member who served in World War One. This medal is script engraved to John Seward. While a fairly common name i came upon roughly 6-10 John Sewards who served in the US during WW1. The Sons of the American Revolution does habe records and i believe it would be highly like that if you access those you can find out exactly which John Seward it was awarded too.. The Sons of the American Revolution is a society were all members can trace their legacy back to having direct relatives who fought in the revolutionary war/ war of independence. I suspect the resesearch could yield some very interesting history on the Seward family.. This sons of the american revolution ww1 service medal are fairly uncommon and named ones are much more desirable… Medal or all types from this society are highly collected. This is for the medal planchet only no ribbon was present with the medal! Planchet is near mint with a stunning bronze patina! Thanks for looking check out all my ww1 and military collectibles!
This Marine medal with the low number 4171 was awarded to George H. Lienneman for good conduct during his four-year enlistment period from 1909 to 1913. All of the engraving on the back is by hand. I nearly overlooked this because it’s so neatly done, but, as you can see, each letter is unique. The Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal was established in 1896 in the design seen here with a ribbon and medal suspended from a clasp bearing the words U. After 1935, that clasp was eliminated. The name of the recipient, the number of the issue and the dates of service were hand engraved until World War II when the medals began to be numbered on the rim and the name, etc…
WWII – 1950s era medal and document group to Major General Carl B. In WWII as a Brigadier General, he was Deputy Commanding General of the 7th AAF in the Pacific. The group includes his medals as shown to include a government hand engraved Air Medal Scarce to a BG! , his Brazilian medal from a pre-war goodwill flight, photos of him to include some with General Curtis LeMay, and more. The piece is vintage and therefore may show signs of age, wear, or patina. At that time, an unpaid item case will automatically be opened. It will be left, but please be patient.
