ORIGINAL LUBECK HANSEATIC WAR MERIT CROSS 1914. This lovely and extremely desirable cross is in pristine condition, with no enamel damage to the arms of the cross. Obverse is the double headed eagle with a red and white shield, the town Coat of Arms of Lübeck on the Baltic Coast. On the reverse are the words’Für Verdienst im Kriege’ (For merit in war)1914. Together with a 6 inch piece of correct, replacement ribbon. Of the three Hanseatic cities Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck, Lübeck was the smallest; with the smallest population of the three cities, which is still true to this day. Unfortunately the town was badly bombed in the 2nd World War and the town Hall along with the town archives relating to this award were burnt. It is estimated that approximately 8,000 to 10,000 of these crosses were issued up until the early 1920′s. Now consider all these factors and the fact that these crosses are extremely fragile, (if you drop them once they are invariably damaged). Then ask yourself, exactly how many of these crosses are still in circulation, and how many in this exceptionally fine condition! At least five times rarer than a Hamburg cross, therefore. At least five times more valuable. This is an extremely RARE and sought after cross! F you do not already have one in your collection then this is the one to get. This would make an extremely good investment. An extremely attractive cross, hard to find in such immaculate condition. The photos speak volumes and what you see is what you get. The Hanseatic Cross (Hanseatenkreuz) was a decoration of the three Hanseatic Cities. Who were member states of the German Empire. During World War I. Each city-state established its own version of the cross, but the design and award criteria were similar for each. The Hanseatic Cross was jointly instituted by agreement of the senates of the three cities, with each senate ratifying the award on different days. The Lübeck version was established first, on August 21, 1915. The Hamburg version followed on September 10 and the Bremen version on September 14. The cross was awarded for merit in war, and could be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel. When awarded for bravery or combat merit, it was the three cities’ equivalent of the Prussian Iron Cross. The Bremen Hanseatic Cross was awarded approximately 20,000 times. There were approximately 50,000 awards of the Hanseatic Cross of Hamburg, the largest Hanseatic city. Lübeck was the smallest of the Hanseatic cities, and its Hanseatic Cross was awarded approximately 8,000 to 10,000 times. The Hanseatic Cross came in only one class, a cross worn from a ribbon on the left chest. The cross was a red-enameled silver cross pattée. Which bore the arms of the relevant city-state on the center medallion. The reverse was identical for all three versions and the center medallion bore the phrase “Für Verdienst im Kriege” (“for merit in war”) and the date “1914″. I hope I have aroused your interest. This collection of medals is being offered together. It pleases the family to do so. Among the many awards is the celebrated “Iron Cross”. And it is fantastic. These medal were worn in parades and other official gatherings, after the war and during. One of them was pinned on by hindenburg. For sale are the madals, soldiers photo, and box. Lot of 7 Original British Medals and Ribbons with 8 clasps awarded to Private A. The medals and ribbons include Queen’s Sudan Medal, Queen’s South Africa Medal with 3 State clasps, King’s South Africa Medal with 2 clasps, WW1 1914 Star with “5th Aug-22nd Nov 1914″ bar, British War Medal, The Victory Medal and 1897 Khedive’s Sudan Medal with 2 clasps. 1 Queen’s Sudan Medal is in silver and was awarded British and Egyptian forces which took part in the Sudan campaign between 1896 and 1898. No clasps were awarded. Around the rim is the recipient’s information 4229 Pte A. 2 Queen’s South Africa Medal which is also in silver with 3 State clasps- Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony. This medal was awarded to British and Colonial military personnel and civilians employed in official capacity who served in the Second Boer War in South Africa from 11 October 1899 to 31 May 1902. The rim of this medal is noted 4229 PTE A. Bennett 2 Sea Highrs. The Transvaal clasp was awarded to all troops in the South African Republic at any time between 24 May 1900 and 31 May 1902 who had not received a clasp for a specific action. The Orange Free State clasp was awarded to all troops who were in this area between 28 Feb 1900 and 31 May 1902 who had not received a clasp for a specific action in the Orange Free State. Cape Colony clasp was awarded to all troops in the Cape of Good Hope at any time between 11 Oct 1899 and 31 May 1902 who had not received a clasp for a specific action in the Cape of Good Hope or the “Natal” clasp. 3 Kings South Africa Medal in silver with 2 clasps, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. The King’s South Africa medal was awarded to all British and Colonial military personnel who served in the Second Boer War in South Africa and who were in the theatre on or after 1 Jan 1902 and who had completed 18 months of service in the conflict prior to 1 June 1902. This medal was always paired with the Queen’s South Africa medal, it was never awarded singly. Around the rim of the Kings South Africa medal is engraved 4229 Pte A. The “South Africa 1901″ clasp was awarded to all troops who served in S. The service number is slightly different on the 1914 Star Medal from the British War Medal for Private Bennett. 6Bronze The Victory Medal which was awarded to all who entered into a theatre of war. The rim on this medal is engraved 3/7353 PTE. HIGHRS The same engraving as noted on the silver War Medal. 7 The silver Khedive’s Sudan Medal (1897) and 2 clasps. This medal was established in 1897 and was awarded by the Khedivate of Egypt for service during the Mahdist War in Sudan. The rim of this medal is engraved 3229 A. BENNETT 1st SEA HIGHRS. Additional photos are available upon request. Total weight of the ribbons, clasps, medals and rear pin is 307 grams. As noted in the photos, the ribbons show some soiling and wear. Lot consists of 1939-45 Star, Pacific Star, War and Defence medals, box of issue still retains part of the address in Hemmings Way, silk Royal Norfolk Regiment sweetheart handkerchief, small original photo of Pte Palmer as a child, 1994 dated reply letter from the CWGC, original 1994 Watford Observer newspaper cutting relating to the story of Pte Palmer and his family that were left behind in the United Kingdom and photocopied photos of him and his grave etc in Singapore. Unfortunately the cond olence slip is not present but the Pacific Star and 39-45 Star were privately engraved by the family at the time of being issued. The box of issue still retains part of the address which is confirmed in the newspaper article. Lovely overall patina to silver frame and all original black to iron core. Maker marked KO for Klein und Quenzer, Idar Oberstein. Saxe Weimar Eisenach Silver Merit Medal 1914 with swords clasp. Rare maker mark Erbe. Original ribbons mounted on a contempory pin backed bar. Miniature matching pin backed ribbon bar. The Photos speak volumes and what you see is what you get.
