Original German post WW2 version / 1957 pattern Luftwaffe Air Radio Operator and Air Gunner Badge, STEINHAUER UND LUECK (ST&L) MADE LATER EXAMPLE OPEN HINGEBLOCK, TWO PIECE CONSTRUCTION, IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, PERFECT PIN DEVICE, THE AWARD IS NOT OFTEN SEEN. FEW FACTS ABOUT THE 1957 PATTERN AWARDS. In 1957 the West German government authorised replacement Iron Crosses with an Oak Leaf Cluster in place of the swastika, similar to the Iron Crosses of 1813, 1870, and 1914, which could be worn by World War II Iron Cross recipients. The 1957 law also authorised de-Nazified versions of most other World War II-era decorations (except those specifically associated with Nazi Party organizations, such as SS Long Service medals, or with the expansion of the German Reich, such as the medals for the annexation of Austria, the Sudetenland, and the Memel region). The main government contract to manufacture and supply these new de-nazified WW2 1957 official decorations went to the world famous German firm Steinhauer & Lueck, Luedenscheid Germany. Knights Crosses, Iron Crosses, Wound Badges, Tank Assault Badges etc were re-designed by Steinhauer & Lück – often with the oak-leaf spray replacing the swastika, with S&L having the sole patent rights to all WW2 1957 German decorations. S&L did not have the whole monopoly on medal making, other famous firms such as Deschler & Sohn, BH Maher and Juncker also manufactured these new German decorations. Lüdenscheid is situated between the cities Dortmund and Bonn. It was here that one of the youngest medal firms was founded in 1889 by August Steinhauer and Gustav Adolf Lück. The first production began in a cellar, the customer base continued to increase. A property was bought at 51 Hochstrasse which is still home for this famous company today. During WW2 Steinhauer & Lück produced medals and badges, like the famous Knights Cross and many other types of medals and badges. In 1957 this company was awarded the contract to produce all the newly re-designed legal WW2 1957 de-nazified decorations, plus the contract to manufacture all of Germany’s official decorations including Germany’s highest order the Bundesverdienstkreuz. Only a very limited number of original WW2 1957 medals are still produced, mainly Iron Crosses, German Cross Gold & Silver & Wound Badges and are considered 100% genuine by the German Government. HISTORY OF THE AWARDS. Luftwaffe Air Radio Operator & Air Gunner badge was instituted on January 19, 1935 and dedicated at first (before the institution of the gunner badge) to radio and gunner qualified personnel. Personnel had to success the training course and to participate at least at 5 operational flights. The badge was oval shaped and slightly vaulted surrounded by a silvered wreath composed of laurel and oak leaves on the base. The old silver oxidized eagle is fixed to the wreath by two small round rivets. The eagle clutched in its claws two crossed lighting bolts which could, depending the manufacture, be more or less detailed and cut out or not. The employed metal varied all along the war from aluminum and tombak, to a silver-nickel called”Neusilber”, zinc, and pot metal. Though initially a cloth version was not authorized, one was later introduced and was found in both bullion and silver wire embroidery. The badge was presented in a dark blue box of which several variants exist, with velvet, cloth or flocage lid. The letters on the top are always golden. A certificate was presented to all personnel who received the badge which was worn, as with most war badges, on the lower left breast, below the Iron Cross. As implied by the title, the badge was presented to Air Gunners and Radio Operators and mechanics who completed two months training or five missions. The criteria was shortened if the soldier received a wound in action.

For sale is a WW2 Royal Navy Gunner Medal Grouping & 1946 London Victory Celebrations Tickets. This medal grouping belongs to Ronald Herbert Cooper, who was at the rank of able seaman in the Royal Navy. Originally he lived at 1 Sycamore avenue in Kent. Unfortunately there isn’t a huge amount of information in this grouping about Ronald Cooper, however we do know he was discharged on the 16th of January 1946. Peekhaus of Berlin in the summer of 1940. The badge consists of an 8.8cm anti aircraft gun, surrounded by an oak leaves crown, surmounted by a soldered or riveted Luftwaffe eagle. On the reverse there is a thin needle round pin. In most cases, a rounded cut out portion can be observed under the gun barrel. The badge was fabricated in tombac later in zinc. Height : 56.3mm to 56.9mm, wide : 43.5mm to 46mm, eagle : 39.9mm to 40.9mm, weight : 26g to 41.8g. On January 1941, the firm er of Berlin was in charge of production, then other firms followed. Other makers are: BREHMER MARKNEUKIRCHEN G. (Gustav Brehmer Markneukirchen), C. JUNCKER BERLIN SW (this type exist with no mark), A (Assmann & Sohn) W in a circle (Werstein Jena), WH (Walter Henlein) G, WL (Gebrüder Wegerhoff Lüdenscheid) and No maker’s mark, some in zinc. The badge was presented in a cardboard dark blue box marked with gold letters “Flak = Kampfabz” or “Luftwaffen = Flak = Kampfabz”. The upper lid is dragon blue silk or paper, the down portion is of blue velvet or flocage. It was worn on the left uniform upper pocket. It was presented with a certificate and its attribution was registered in the personnel documents (Soldbuch, Wehrpass). This badge was awarded in recognition for anti aircraft or ground combats, up to the institution of the ground combat badge. All air defense artillery personnel (including radar control units and search light units) were eligible for the badge. The attribution was based on points addition, and 16 points were necessary. They were earned as follows: 1 point – First detection of incoming aircraft by means of 150cm or 60 cm search lights by acoustical means, and following the aircraft to another search light team. 2 points – Participation in the downing of an enemy aircraft my means of ground based fire (AA batteries primarily, but it could also be Machine gun or rifle fire). Participation in the downing of an enemy aircraft by means of blinding the aircraft with search lights. 4 points – Same action as above, but without participation of other batteries. The badge could also be presented for single meritorious actions or distinctive leadership. The Battery Commander could be awarded the badge if the half of his Battery crews were already decorated. London Gazette 25 May 1945. 432 (Iroqouis) Squadron at East Moor, Yorkshire on 5 June 1944 and flew his first Op that same day in a Halifax flown by Flight Lieutenant Pettit, bombing Houlgate. He flew on Coutances on D-Day and made it a hat-trick, bombing the railway yards in Paris on 7 June to notch his first 3 Sorties in three days. Having completed 5 Sorties by 15 June, Cornell joined No. 419 Squadron at Middleton St. George and flew his first Sortie in a Lancaster on 24 June, raiding Bamieres. As the months rolled on, Cornell honed his skills, firing on a Ju88 when attacking Vileneuve St George on 4 July and taking flak on Sortie 13 to Stuttgart on 25 July. 431 (Iroqouis) Squadron at Croft, Durham in August 1944 and flew his 20th Sortie to attack guns, tanks and troops in the Falaise area on 18 August. He was on the raid of 4 October to Bergen, Norway to attack the submarine pens, but it was his 28th Sortie on 6 December that would see Cornell called upon. Flying home from their target of Osnabruk, Squadron Leader Smith had their Lancaster flying level at 16,000ft at around 2200hrs. An enemy Ju88 attacked them from the port quarter, with Cornell getting in two bursts and the Rear Gunner, Pilot Officer Supergia getting off five bursts. A starboard corkscrew was called for and executed, with the Ju88 spotted to have fire pouring from its port engine – it was claimed probable destroyed (A Yorkshire Squadron – History of 431 RCAF, 1942-45, refers). Cornell flew his 36th and final Sortie on 12 March 1945, for a raid on Dortmund. This officer handled his guns with cool determination, making split second decisions to guide his pilot and mid-upper gunner. At last, he manoeuvred into position and sped in to the attack from one side of the Canadian-built aircraft. // Immediately, the big machine dipped a wing and its nose in a corkscrewing movement of surprising agility. It was not for nothing that the pilot, Squadron Leader Harold Smith of New Westminster, B. Commanded a flight of Iroquois aircrews. // At the same time, the tail gunner, Pilot Officer Gus Supergia of Regina (2165 Francis Street), sent a long burst of tracers riveting into the heavily armed night fighter. It never had a chance to fire. As Supergia gave it three more bursts, his mate in the mid-upper turret rotated his guns into position and contributed two short bursts. Both gunners saw strikes rattling on the Junkers. A spot of fire, showed on one of its twin engines, spread swiftly. The Nazi sheered away in a dive, well aflame.
