This is an extremely rare Second World War solid bronze medallic award. This is a medal issued by the French Red Cross (CRF ; Croix-Rouge Francais) in Egypt. The rectangular medal has been awarded for helping prisoners of war in the Post Said camp. Whether the medal was awarded to an individual, an authority or an organisation, I do not know. The medal (6.00 cm x 14.50 cm) depicts a chained man reaching out to a Red Cross sun. Incised, on the reverse, is the following caption;’ PORT-SAID AIDE AUX PRISONNIERES DE GUERRE 1943′. The medal is also numbered’39′ on the reverse. I have seen other similar Port Said CRF bronze POW Camp medals(different numbers and design). They are rare enough. However, I have never seen this issue anywhere. This item is in the category “Collectables\Militaria\World War II (1939-1945)\Medals/ Ribbons”. Commemorative Medal of Voluntary Service in the Ranks of Free France (Médaille commémorative des Services Volontaires dans la France Libre). General Edgard de Larminat proposed the creation of an award for the volunteers of the Free French troops who fought against the Axis on all fronts of the Second World War. The Free French troops numbered only 7,000 fighters in July 1940, and by 1942 had grown to about 70,000 men. They were especially active in the battles in North Africa, and subsequently formed the backbone of the 1st division of the Free French, which took an active part in the Italian company of 1944, and the liberation of Paris in August 1944. In addition, the Free French had, albeit not numerous, their own Navy and Air Force, which took part in most of the important battles of the anti-Hitler coalition. By 1944, Free French waxes numbered about half a million, and in 1945, they crossed the one million mark. Established April 4, 1946. Commemorative Medal of Service in the Free French Forces has become an award for both military and civilians, regardless of their nationality. Those who signed a volunteer contract, with the forces of free France, until August 1, 1943 (for the military). Those who entered service in the territories controlled by the National Committee in London before August 1, 1943 (for civilians). In good condition as on the photos. They look just gorgeous!
