For your consideration is this early WWI rim-numbered U. Marine Corps Good Conduct medal with 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th subsequent award bars. The ribbon is in exceptional original condition, and there is some light patina, which could be cleaned by the new owner, on the medal. The fourth award bar has raised lettering, and has not been added. The 2nd, 3rd, and 5th award bars are pin-back construction. This is a super rare piece. Not sure the last time I saw a 5th award bar… See pics for exact detail. For sale is a very nice collection of 13 original WW2 medals, patches, dog tag, and other pieces with identifying information. Includes in the lot is a very rare thumbprint dog tag with the following engraved on one side. 275919 – A T7-41 – USMC. Also included is a U. Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with the backside engraved. A 8450 – Charles M. The sterling silver locket has an “E A” scratched on the front and “Lolly Betty Jean” on the back, possibly the girlfriend/wife of the soldier. The other sterling silver piece included is a Sharpshooter Medal, marked “Sterling” on the bar and medal. Also included in this lot. 1 – Sharpshooter bar. Marine Corps – Ex. WW1 German Iron Cross 1st Class Medal in Very Good Condition

Besides being in very good shape, I know a bit of the history of this medal. My great-great-uncle Victor Smith was fighting in the trenches as a member of the British Army. He bayoneted the German soldier who had earned this medal and took it off the dead body as a trophy. The loop on the back that retains the pin is slightly bent. I chose not to mess with that as that is part of the history of this medal. Please feel encouraged to contact me if you have any questions. Not sure what else I might know, but I will do my best. ORIGINAL WORLD WAR I UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, SEWN BAR BROOCH, & SECOND AWARD BAR. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN IN PHOTO #12. The Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal was established on 20 July 1896. The medal was originally a ribbon and medal suspended from a clasp bearing the words U. The clasp was eliminated after WWII and the medal has remained unchanged in appearance since that time. Since its inception in 1896, the name of the recipient was engraved by hand on the reverse side of the medal until stamping the name on the medal began during World War II (numbered on the rim) and was done completely by 1951. In 1953, the Marine Corps adopted bronze and silver 3/16-inch service stars to denote additional awards of the Good Conduct Medal, replacing enlistment bars showing each honorable period of service. Since 10 December 1954, members of the Marine Corps must have three consecutive years of honorable and faithful service in order to be eligible for the medal.
