A lovely, scarce WW1′France and Flanders’ M. M medal group to the 5th (The Sutherland and Caitness Highland) territorial battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He landed with his battalion on 1st May, 1915. Awarded the Meritorious service medal (London Gazette: 18th Janurary, 1919) for France and Flanders. Comes with basic copied research, it would be worth checking the 5th battalion War Diary as not many MSM’s would have been awarded to the battalion. 1914/15 star correctly impressed -”3170 PTE. Alvin Cullum York [1887 1964] better known as Sergeant York was one of the most decorated American soliders during World War I who was awarded the Medal of Honor. Sergeant York recieved his award for his actions during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France. During the offensive Sergeant York lead an attack on a German machine gun nest which resulted in the destruction of the machine gun nest, the recovery of 32 machine guns, the killing of 20 German soliders and the capture of 132 others. The document is a check drawn upon his account,”Sgt. York Farmer and Promoter of The Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute, dated May 1, 1934. The check is completed in his hand and is signed”Sgt Alvin C. The check measures 6.25 x 2.75 inches, it has trivial fold lines otherwise it is in fine condition.
