Second World War Medal Group of 6 to Private James Andrew Jaftha – 6. Armoured Division Reserve Armoured Regiment, Late Imperial Light Horse/Kimberly Regiment. 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, British War Medal, African Service Medal C320209 J. Mounted as worn, very fine (6). Was born on the 24. July 1907 and was living at 1. Avenue, Claremount, Cape, South Africa when he enlisted into the South African army on the 10. He served in the infantry with the Imperial Light Horse/Kimberley Regiment which was part of the newly formed 11th South African Armoured Brigade, 6. South African Armoured Division. In early April 1944 Private Jaftha transferred to the Reserve Armoured Regiment, South African Armoured Corps, 6. South African Armoured Division with whom he entered the Italian theatre of war with in late April 1944. At the end of January 1945 he was transferred to the Reserve Motorised Battalion, 6. The 6th South African Armoured Division was the second armoured division of the South African Army and was formed during World War II. The division was initially transferred to Egypt for training, after which it served in the Allied campaign in Italy during 1944 and 1945. In Italy, the division was initially deployed as part of the British Eighth Army, under command of Lieutenant-General Oliver Leese, and was then transferred to the U. Fifth Army, under Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark, for the remainder of the Italian Campaign. The division operated as a strongly reinforced division and was frequently used to spearhead the advance of the Corps and Army to which it was attached. A brilliant history of the 6.
