Rare Named Orig WW2 Military Cross MC Medal Group RCR Royal Canadian Regiment

Rare original WW2 “Military Cross – MC” medal group that is named to “Acting Major John Gerald Stevens” who won it serving with the “RCR – Royal Canadian Regiment”. Only 9 Military Crosses were awarded to this unit during WW2. The group has been plated and the MC is named John G. It is a great combat won citation that reads. Captain (Acting Major) John Gerald Stevens was Brigade major of 7 Canadian Infantry Brigade from 3 August 1944 to 11 April 1945 and during the period from 1 February 1945 was involved in a number of major engagements. This Officer was responsible for all the detailed planning of the part played by its Brigade in Operation Veritable and the care and forethought displayed by him was most certainly partially responsible for the success of the operation. On many occasions Major Stevens was subjected to enemy small arms and mortar fire whilst obtaining information from the battalions when normal communications were extended. One such instance occurred on 28 February 1945 when 7 Canadian Infantry Brigade was ordered to take over ground from 11 Armoured Division near Sonsbeck Germany, The Brigade had no means of communication with this Division and only very scanty information was available. Reconnaissance and contact patrols had been sent out to liaise with the Monmouthshire Regiment but they could not be located. Major Stevens realizing the necessity of obtaining this information in order that the Brigadier could make his plans, volunteered to contact 11 Armoured Division. The speed of the advance of the Brigade had left many isolated pockets of resistance and in the darkness of the night the journey was extremely hazardous. On ay least 5 occasions the car in which this Officer was riding was fired on by riflemen and machine gunners but except for a few holes in the body of the vehicle the occupants escaped injury. After about an hour drive Major Stevens encountered a Company of one of the Battalions of the Brigade was to relieve and after being passed on to the Brigade headquarters of the Battalion he obtained the full dispositions of the 3 Battalions, thereby enabling 7 Canadian Infantry Brigade to complete the relief by first light the following morning. The service rendered by Major Stevens during the entire time he was Brigade Major was outstanding and the assistance which he gave to the Battalions was invaluable. His energy, loyalty and cheerfulness was at all times worthy of the highest praise. Please wait until the INVOICE is sent to you. Again, wait until INVOICE is sent. Please use common sense. Australian WW1 brothers groups, British War Medal and Victory Medals to 1st Light Regiment, also comes with a 1914-15 Star for each man which they were not entitled to but somehow they have the Stars, long ago someone has thought the groups required the 14-15 Stars and added them. British War Medal and Victory Medal 2106 PTE. British War Medal and Victory Medal 1859 PTE. The 1914-15 Stars are included in the sale but I stress that neither man was entitled to the medal, they have been sourced from somewhere to enhance the groups. THEY HAVE A VERY UNUSUAL MOUNT WHICH CONSISTS OF THREE BARS SOLDERED TO THE BACK OF THE SUSPENSION BAR TO PREVENT THE MEDALS FROM SWINGING TYPICAL OF THE GUARDS. THIS HAS NOT DAMAGED THE MEDALS IN ANY WAY WHICH ARE ALL FREE MOVING. THEY ARE ON THEIR ORIGINAL RIBBONS. WHAT IS NICE ABOUT THIS GROUP IS THAT JACK SHOESMITH JOINED THE GRENADIER GUARDS IN 1915 AND THEN WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE SCARCE GUARDS MACHINE GUN REGIMENT WHICH IS CONFIRMED ON HIS MEDAL INDEX CARD AND HIS PENSION PAPERS WHICH ARE ON ANCESTRY. Ww1 1914 star & medals to a captain kings liverpool regiment + letters. Kia 1915

An extremely rare and important group of medals together with a large amount of letters from the front for a Captain in the Kings 1st battalion and subsequently 4th extra reserve battalion of the Kings liverpool battalion who was killed at the Battle of Ypres on 1st May 1915. Captain David Aitken Lumsden’s medals consist of a 1914 star a British war Medal and victory medal. All are correctly named. He is lieutenant on the 1914 star and captain on the victory and war Medal. Captain Lumsden was from Dundee and the letters and telegrams are all addressed to his then girlfriend an Eleanor Lockhart also from Dundee. It is a most poignant story of love and a man vying for the attentions of a Companion in the midst of war. Some of the letters are written on kings liverpool headed notepaper and others are written on paperwork obviously scavenged from wherever the captain could. It gives an amazing insight into both the social etiquette of the time and general day to day life in the war. One letter states “we’ve really got in the neck again, 392 casualties and 190 from my own battalion” Another letter “all my officers have been hit bar one but luckily I haven’t been hit yet” A week after he wrote that he was dead. I have carried out a small amount of quick research via the Internet and found the copy of the paper cutting which is the last photo. I haven’t got a copy but it can be printed or applied for easily enough from the imperial war museum. It states that Captain Lumsden was a colour Sgt in his otc was sent to the front wounded sent home and then sent back out when subsequently he was killed when his commanding officer seeing some men “held up” the commanding office stated he was going to see what was happening, captain Lumsden replied no sir, I will do it. Captain Lumsden stood up and got out of the shell hole and went to the aid of these men when he was shot In the head. An amazing grouping with so much history. You do get a huge insight into captain Lumsden and his funny personality from the letters. You can also see how the longer he spends in the trenches his writing suffers and he says he wishes he could get a wound and go to see his girlfriend but not that he was not enjoying the “show” ie the war. His last contact with home is sadly a hastily written field postcard which shows how short time must have been and how bad thing had become. I wish I could keep the set. Thanks for looking and any questions please ask. The item “Ww1 1914 star & medals to a captain kings liverpool regiment + letters. Kia 1915″ is in sale since Friday, August 05, 2016.
