On September 1st of each year, regimental leaders would be awarded this badge, to be worn on their uniform coats. Group includes 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 & 1902-56 Africa General Service Medal impressed named to CAPT. Medals court mounted for display with basic research paperwork. John Gordon Laing enlisted in the British Army 11/1/1937 and served with the Royal West Surry Regiment. Most likely he served with the 2nd Battalion, as they were the only Battalion within the regiment to have served in both North Africa & Burma. The 2nd Bn were transferred to Burma and made up part of the 16th Brigade, 6th Infantry Division which was later redesignated as the 70th Infantry Division and were involved in Operation Thursday, the second Chindits campaign which aimed to transport troops behind enemy lines by air to create fortified bases with airstrips for operational use. Transferred to the Reserve 26/5/1946. He was commissioned from the ranks as a Second Lieutenant in the Kenya Regiment on 5 February 1953. A World War One War and Victory medal pair with Memorial Plaque to a soldier from. The group was awarded to GS – 37352 Private James Smith of the Royal Fusiliers. The medal group includes the following. The War and Victory Medals – both correctly named as follows. GS – 37352 PTE. The memorial plaque named to. Private James Smith was born in Kings Cross, London and lived in Southery, Norfolk. He enlisted in Norfolk and served with the 4th Battalion (City of London Regiment) of the Royal Fusiliers. He was the son in law of Eliza Cobbin of Southery, Downham, Norfolk. He was killed in action aged 31 on 3rd May 1918 and is buried at the Sandpits British Cemetery in Fouquereuil, France. He was also wounded in October 1917. His Medal Index Card confirms that these were his only medals. An interesting and complete Casualty Medal Group to a worthy of more research. Offered is an original 1935-36 era Indian Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal to a member of the 3rd Battalion, 11th Sikh Regiment. 36mm wide circular silver medal with claw and ornate scroll swivel ribbon bar; the face with the crowned head and shoulders portrait of King George V facing left in coronation robes, circumscribed GEORGIUS V D G BRITT. REX ET INDIÆ IMP (George V by the Grace of God King of Great Britain and Emperor of India); the reverse with the wording INDIA, surrounded by a small wreath, surrounded by the legend FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT, with a continuous border of lotus flowers and leaves round the border of the medal; attributed on the edge to 2280 NK. ISHAR SINGH, 3-11 SIKH R. Established on 27 July 1888, the Indian Long Service and Good Conduct Medal could be awarded to sowars, sepoys, as well as lance-dafadars, naiks, and lance-naiks of the British Indian Army. To be awarded the medal men must have served at least 20 years and had performed in a meritorious manner, with no court-martials, and having been entered in the defaulters book fewer than five times.
