Group of eight awarded to Air Commodore H. Blair, Royal Air Force who commanded No. 31 Squadron in the early years of the Second World War, going on to serve as Chief Signals Officer, Air Section, HQ Combined Operations in 1942. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Commander’s C. , Military Division, neck Badge, silver-gilt and enamel; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, clasp, North Africa 1942-42, Defence and War Medals 1939-45; General Service 1918-62, 2 clasps, Malaya, Cyprus GP. , officially engraved naming; Coronation 1937; Coronation 1953, mounted as worn where applicable, service worn contact marks, very fine overall. London Gazette 1 January 1958. Air Commodore Henry Gordon Blair was born on 2 July 1909 at Chorlton-on-Medlock, Lancashire. Commissioned into the Royal Air Force on 29 December 1930 as Pilot Officer and posted to No. 2 Flying Training School on 10 January 1931. After spending time as an Instructor at the Central Flying School Blair was appointed Instructor/Adjutant of No. 603 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force on 16 February 1934. Promoted Flight Lieutenant on 1 June 1936 he was posted to No. 28 Squadron on the Northwest Frontier, acting as their Signals Officer from 5 October 1937. Appointed to command the Squadron the next year he was advanced Squadron Leader on 1 December 1938 before moving to command No. Blair was transferred to the Special Branch on 25 April 1940 upon returning to Britain. Appointed a Staff Officer at the Directorate of Telecommunications on 1 March 1941 and later Chief Signals Officer, Air Section, HQ Combined Operations on 9 June 1942. Promoted Wing Commander 1 April 1943, Blair was appointed to Air Staff, Supreme HQ South East Asia on 18 October. Continuing to specialise in signals, Blair became Deputy Director of the Directorate of Signals on 11 September 1944. The next year he became Senior Radio Officer for HQ Air Command Far East on 1 July 1947 later promoted to Command Signals Officer with the same unit on 6th April 1948. Appointed Command Signals Officer, Air Staff, Middle East Air Force on 29 August 1955 he was promoted Air Commodore on 1 July 1956. His final commission was as Director of Radio Engineering on 14 July 1958. Retiring on 29 October 1960 Blair became Deputy Lieutenant for Berkshire on 8 August 1975, he died in March 1989 at Swindon, Wiltshire. His brother, Kenneth Hughes Blair, was a fighter ace with eight confirmed kills. While serving with No. 85 Squadron he was awarded the D. World War One casualty medal groups and memorial plaques to two brothers who came from New Deer in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The groups were awarded to Fred Knox who served with the Gordon Highlanders and John Knox who served with the Royal Artillery. Fred Knox – the group includes his named memorial plaque, 1915 star named to 1117 PTE. War Medal named to 1117 PTE. Ctory Medal is an original medal but the naming has been removed. The group includes his named memorial plaque, War Medal and Victory Medal both named to 218189 GNR. Private Fred Knox served in the machine gun section of’A’ Company of the 1/5th. And he and he w. As killed in action aged 24 on 1st June 1915. A letter detailing his death was sent to his mother, Mrs Elsie Simpson (formally Knox) at 13 Main Street New Deer, by the Company Sergeant Major William Watt and was published in the Buchan Observer and East Aberdeenshire Advertiser on 15th June 1915. B uchan Observer and East Aberdeenshire Advertiser – Tuesday 15 June 1915. Mrs Simpson (formerly Mrs Knox), New Deer, has received the following letter from Company Sergeant-Major William Watt regarding the death of her son, Private Fred Knox. It grieves me very much to write informing you of your son Freds death. He was killed action on June I. He was in the machine gun section and was amongst the fall. There is one comforthe hadnt felt any pain as death must have been instantaneous. He was very well liked the men of his section, and he was one that knew his work well in connection with the machine gun. You and Mr Simpson have my deepest sympathy. The non commissioned officers and men of A Company send their united sympathy. Fred has no known grave and is commemorated at La Touret Memorial. Gunner John James Knox served with the 53rd Battery, 2nd Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in. Action aged 19 on 22nd December 1917. He had lived in Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire before the war. His death was reported in the Aberdeen Weekly Journal on 18th January 1918 as well as in other local newspapers. Offered is a Military Medal group of 3 to Sergeant Douglas Arthur Gordon 157. Medal group comprising Military Medal (King George V) impressed named 171226 BMBR: D. War and Victory Medals impressed named 171226 CPL. The medals are in exceptionally fine condition and come with copies of service papers (burnt records) medal index card, medal roll & photographs. His Military Medal was gazetted 9/10/1918 (London Gazette). The schedule number was 186427. The schedule range of 185,000-187,600 covers awards for April/May-June 1918. Was born in 1884 and was residing pre and post war in Hoylake Cheshire England. He had previous service with the King Edwards Horse. He enlisted 10/12/1915 and was placed in the Army Reserve. He was eventually called up 7/7/1917 to the Royal Garrison Artillery and posted to the 157. Siege Battery with whom he served with in France as a gun layer. He was home from 7/7/1917-19/11/197. /11/1918 then home to discharge 1919 with the rank of Sergeant. It is known that Douglas served in WW2 with the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve as he would have been in his mid 50s. His two sons served in the Royal Artillery in WW2. He emigrated to Rhodesia and was the Mayor of Gwelo in 1953. Rhodesia,’Southern Rhodesia: Gwelo is the fourth largest town in Southern Rhodesia, and is situated in the centre of the Midlands. Landed in France 30/11/1916. Siege Batteries RGA were equipped with heavy howitzers, sending large calibre high explosive shells in high trajectory, plunging fire. The usual armaments were 6 inch, 8 inch and 9.2 inch howitzers, although some had huge railway- or road-mounted 12 inch howitzers. As British artillery tactics developed, the Siege Batteries were most often employed in destroying or neutralising the enemy artillery, as well as putting destructive fire down on strongpoints, dumps, store, roads and railways behind enemy lines. 157 Siege Battery RGA (four 6 howitzers) first appears in the order of battle in France in Dec 1916, as part of Fifth Army Artillery. It spent 1917 in the Ypres Salient, mostly with Fifth Army, throughout 1917, being attached to various Heavy Artillery Groups. In Feb 1918 when HAGs were re designated Brigades RGA, 157 Siege Battery became part of 70 (9;2 Howitzer) Brigade RGA, in which it remained for the rest of 1918, mostly as part of First Army. Group includes 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 & 1902-56 Africa General Service Medal impressed named to CAPT. Medals court mounted for display with basic research paperwork. John Gordon Laing enlisted in the British Army 11/1/1937 and served with the Royal West Surry Regiment. Most likely he served with the 2nd Battalion, as they were the only Battalion within the regiment to have served in both North Africa & Burma. The 2nd Bn were transferred to Burma and made up part of the 16th Brigade, 6th Infantry Division which was later redesignated as the 70th Infantry Division and were involved in Operation Thursday, the second Chindits campaign which aimed to transport troops behind enemy lines by air to create fortified bases with airstrips for operational use. Transferred to the Reserve 26/5/1946. He was commissioned from the ranks as a Second Lieutenant in the Kenya Regiment on 5 February 1953. A good example of an original WW1 mint medal trio, in packets and boxes of issue, with two letters and photographs. John Forsyth 8th Gordon Highlanders, a soldier in the new army that would of been fighting at the Battle of Loos (25th September 1915). Forsyth was wounded during thr battle of Loos and continued serving in the 8th Gordon Highlanders, subsequently joining the 10th battalion, making the 8/10th battalion. John Forsyth landed with the 8th battalion on the 10th May 1915 at Boulogne, before heading into battle, at Loos. Group comes with an interesting photograph of the Gordon Highlanders. It appears to be a stretcher bearer unit. John Forsyth could have possibly been a stretcher bearer throughout the War in France and Flanders. Medals coorectly impressed -”S-1826 PTE J. Letters give Forsyth’s address of 16 Glebe Park, Kircaldy (Scotland). Any questions please feel free to ask. WW1 MEDALS & DEATH PLAQUES -KIA- BROTHERS- GORDON HIGHLANDERS & ROYAL ARTILLERY. 218189 Gunner John Knox of the Royal Artillery is represented here by his Death Plaque, War and Victory Medal while 1117 Private Fred Knox has a Death Plaque, War medal and 1914-15 Star. As you’ll see from our pictures, these awards have not been looked at for decades and have heavy patina but this would clean away if desired. We have not researched either brother however the previous owner of the medals suggested they were twins from the North East of Scotland.
