Désiré-Félicien-François-Joseph Mercier (21 November 1851 – 23 January 1926) was a Belgian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and a noted scholar. A Thomist scholar, he had several of his works translated into other European languages. He was known for his book, Les origines de la psychologie contemporaine (1897). His scholarship gained him recognition from the Pope and he was appointed as Archbishop of Mechelen, serving from 1906 until his death, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1907. After the invasion, he distributed a strong pastoral letter, Patriotism and Endurance, to be read in all his churches, urging the people to keep up their spirits. He served as a model of resistance. Offered is an original Order of the Lion from Finland – Officer Grade. Features a Silver cross pattée, the arms frosted, with eyelet with silver hallmarks and silver and red enamel suspension ring; the face with a circular central red enamel medallion bearing a silver lion of Finland within a ridged ring with red enamel ties; the reverse plain white enamel; on original ribbon with rosette. The Order was established on 11 September 1942 and may be awarded for both military and civilian merit to Finns and to foreigners. It was designed by Oskar Pihl, son of Fabergés Moscow master, who was the influential head designer of the Finnish jeweller and silversmith Tillander from 1923 to 1957. The aim of the creation of the Order was to prevent dilution of the Order of the Cross of Liberty and the Order of the White Rose of Finland at a time when Finlands heroic struggle against Soviet forces was daily littered with acts of heroism and merit that deserved recognition. Very hard to come by. Up for sale is an original German Imperial Order of the Zähringer Lion, with Oak leaves, Commander Grade, Military Medal. They are hard to come by from what I understand. It measures roughly 1 5/8. I placed a quarter and stick rule next to the medal for size comparison. Silver filigree cross, with bronzed crossed swords, with green enamel cross arms, with central painted Zähringer castle in ruins, with roped brass border. The reverse, with central silver cross and red enamel field with brass rampant lion, with filigree design within cross arms. The 3 branched set of burnished brass oak leaves forms the central suspension ring, which hooks through the suspension loop of the cross. For special awards, the order was granted with oak leaves and from 1866 could also be awarded with crossed swords for military services. It came in five different classes. 2- Commander 1st class. 4- Knight- 1st class. 5- Knight- 2nd class.
