The item shown is a badge or commemorative medal for the 10th Bavarian Infantry Division during World War I. The division was formed on March 3, 1915, and disbanded in August 1918. It participated in major battles such as the Battle of the Somme, Passchendaele, and the Second Battle of the Marne. The badge likely depicts a soldier battling a bear and a multi-headed serpent, possibly symbolizing the challenges faced by the division. The text on the badge reads “KARE THEN” and “RK”. FRANCE – GERMANY – TO THE GLORY OF THE HEROES OF VERDUN MEDAL 1916 PARIS (MINT STATE). The Battle of Verdun was fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916 on the Western Front in France. The battle was the longest of the First World War and took place on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse. MEDAL IS STAMPED ON ITS EDGE ” BRONZE ” WITH THE CORNUCOPIA MINT MARK OF THE MONNAIE de PARIS (PARIS MINT). Obverse: Marianne and personification of Fury block the path of the German eagle, clasping sword, in foreground; civic and national shields to lower right. Reverse: Three medallions containing the busts of Generals Petain, Nivelle, and de Castelnau above legend in five lines; all within wreath, with awards clasped at the bottom.
