IMO Very fine condition plus, British War and Victory Medals official impressed name 46371 Cpl. ; 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Efficiency Decoration, G. 1st issue, Territorial, reverse officially dated 1943, with integral top riband bar; Special Constabulary Long Service Medal, G. 2nd issue “Cecil Hooper” very fine and better Cecil Hooper attested for the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and served with the Machine Gun Corps during the Great War on the Western Front. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Tank Corps towards the end of the War, before transferring to the Royal Artillery (Territorial Force). He was promoted Captain on 24 August 1939, and was awarded his Efficiency Decoration in 1943 (London Gazette 25 March 1943). WW1 British Army medal group attributed to Lieutenant G. Crosse, of the Machine Gun Corps & Yorkshire Regiment, who served post war in Kurdistan & Iraq & in the South African Army during WW2. Medals court mounted for display and come with copies M. Medal rolls, 1911 census, hospital admission record 1916, London Gazette, Army Lists, passenger list & school magazine The ANTUARIAN. George Hallewell Crosse was born in Kent, England on the 23/2/1896. He was the son of the Reverend T. Crosse, Vicar of Faversham, Kent. He attended The Kings School, Canterbury January 1910; 6th Form, September 1913; Monitor, Sept. 1913-14- 15; 1st IV. 1914; sports colours, 1914 gaining a number of academic and sports distinctions. Admitted to Royal Military College, Sandhurst by examination & gazetted as a temporary 2nd Lieutenant 23/10/1914. Landed France 25/4/1916 with Princess of Wales Own (Yorkshire Regiment). From the school magazine, it states that G. Crosse has been undergoing a 16 days’ machine-gun course at Strensall, York. As he expressively puts it we work all day long and write notes all night long. He expects to be appointed as instructor in this course for about two months, and then to go to France. His two brothers, T. Crosse are already at the front. We arrived out here on April 23rd and came straight up here. It is great sport being in these Bde. About three or four times a week I go all round the trenches and work out the best scheme of defence. He was serving with the Yorkshire Regiment, when he was awarded his G. And was still serving with them in 1922 (Army List). In August 1923, he emigrated to South Africa. The school magazine shows his WW2 service: WAR RECORD No. 14- MARCH, 1944 G. H, CROSSE to Captain, Tank Training Corps, S. Crosse (1910- 14) is now O. Of a Gunnery School in South Africa. Died 27/11/1949, Scottburgh KwaZulu-Natal South Africa. Of the 4 Crosse brothers who served during WW1, George was wounded in Action 21/9/1916, whilst serving with the M. Gunshot wound to right foot, two were killed Thomas Latymer Crosse K. 3/7/1917 & Robert Grant Crosse D. 14/7/1916, the fourth brother, Brigadier Edward Neufville Crosse, finished the war as Acting Captain M. He served as Commander, Corps Royal Artillery, 21st Army Group from 14/3/1945 to 21/6/1945, appointed C. Order of Orange Nassau with Swords of the Netherlands 23 May 1947 & Aide-de-Camp to the King, 3/11/1948. We list militaria and coins weekly. Offered is a First World War 1918 D. Group of seven awarded to Lt. Hughes, 6th (City of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Rifles). Medal group features: Distinguished Service Order, G. Silver-gilt and enamel, reverse of suspension bar inscribed London Regiment. 1st January 1918; Military Cross, G. Reverse inscribed Captain Edward William Hughes, 6th Bn. City of London Regt. 3rd June 1916; 1914-15 Star Capt. ; British War and Victory Medals, with M. Oak leaves Major E. ; Territorial Efficiency Decoration, G. London Gazette 1 January 1918. London Gazette 3 June 1916. London Gazette 1 January 1916; 15 May and 11 December 1917; 5 July 1919. Edward William Hughes was commissioned into the Territorial Forces 1/6th (City of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Rifles). At the outbreak of war, the regiment was part of the 2nd London Division, stationed at Watford. The battalion crossed to France on board the S. Marguerite from Southampton to Le Havre on 17/18th March 1915. The regiment was part of 140 Brigade in 47 Division and fought at the battles of Aubers Ridge (9 May 1915), Festubert (15-25 May 1915), Loos (25 September-10 October 1915), Hohenzollern Redoubt (13-18 October 1915), and Vimy Ridge (2 May 1916). In May 1915 the machine gun sections of the battalions of 47 Division were united into Brigade Machine Gun Companies, of which Hughes commanded the 1/6th London Regiment section which formed part of 140 Brigade Machine Gun Company, until March 1916. He was promoted to Major on 1 June 1916, and posted to the staff of 140 Brigade as Machine Gun Officer until March 1918, when he was posted as D. To 1st Division until the end of the war. In 1920 he rejoined 1/6 London Regiment as second-in-command and commanded it in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel from 1925-28. He died on 17 November 1958, aged 79. We list militaria and coins weekly.
