Commemorative Medal of Voluntary Service in the Ranks of Free France (Médaille commémorative des Services Volontaires dans la France Libre). General Edgard de Larminat proposed the creation of an award for the volunteers of the Free French troops who fought against the Axis on all fronts of the Second World War. The Free French troops numbered only 7,000 fighters in July 1940, and by 1942 had grown to about 70,000 men. They were especially active in the battles in North Africa, and subsequently formed the backbone of the 1st division of the Free French, which took an active part in the Italian company of 1944, and the liberation of Paris in August 1944. In addition, the Free French had, albeit not numerous, their own Navy and Air Force, which took part in most of the important battles of the anti-Hitler coalition. By 1944, Free French waxes numbered about half a million, and in 1945, they crossed the one million mark. Established April 4, 1946. Commemorative Medal of Service in the Free French Forces has become an award for both military and civilians, regardless of their nationality. Those who signed a volunteer contract, with the forces of free France, until August 1, 1943 (for the military). Brunswick Peninsula Commemorative Medal, Deaths Head (17th) Hussars BRAUNSCHWEIG Peninsula Erinnerungsmedaille, Totenkopf 17. The medal was awarded by the Dukedom of Brunswick in 1909 to the descendants of the 17th Regiment (Deaths Head) Hussars who fought in the Napoleonic Peninsular wars of 1809. The Duchy of Brunswick was absorbed into the newly-created Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807 as a result of the Prussian defeat at Jena-Auerstedt on 14 October 1806. The Duke of Brunswick, leading the largest Prussian army, was wounded at the battle and died two days later, his son Friedrich Wilhelm, present at the battle as a major-general, inheriting the title. Initially, Friedrich Wilhelm fled to Baden but in 1809 he created the Black Brunswickers and fought with the Austrian Empire against Napoleonic France. Following Austrian defeat, he took his force of 2,300 men to England and subsequently to Spain and Portugal during the Peninsular War where they gained a reputation for brave, disciplined fighting.
