Group includes 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 & 1902-56 Africa General Service Medal impressed named to CAPT. Medals court mounted for display with basic research paperwork. John Gordon Laing enlisted in the British Army 11/1/1937 and served with the Royal West Surry Regiment. Most likely he served with the 2nd Battalion, as they were the only Battalion within the regiment to have served in both North Africa & Burma. The 2nd Bn were transferred to Burma and made up part of the 16th Brigade, 6th Infantry Division which was later redesignated as the 70th Infantry Division and were involved in Operation Thursday, the second Chindits campaign which aimed to transport troops behind enemy lines by air to create fortified bases with airstrips for operational use. Transferred to the Reserve 26/5/1946. He was commissioned from the ranks as a Second Lieutenant in the Kenya Regiment on 5 February 1953. The Kenya Regiment was heavily involved in the suppression of the Mau Mau uprising. We list militaria and coins weekly. We provide quality mounted medals, badges and historical research. Boer War Miniature Medal pair to Lord Strathcona’s Horse, KIA WW1 as Captain, KOSB, Father a Famous Archdeacon / Missionary. The pair of miniature dress medals named to Private A. Shaw; King’s South Africa Medal 1901-02, 1 clasp, South Africa 1901 A. Shaw, contemporarily engraved naming. Alexander James Macintosh Shaw was born in Tokyo, Japan to Archdeacon Alexander Croft Shaw and Mary Ann Cattell. His father was born in Toronto and was descended from a noted Scottish Military Family and became an important Missionary serving mainly in Japan and China (see link below). He served with Lord Strathcona’s Horse in South Africa. Shaw’s full-size awards were delivered to him in 1906 whilst he was serving with the Peking Syndicate, Chias-Tzo, North China; with medal roll confirmation of attribution and a few service papers, listing his occupation in 1900 a Surveyor. Alexander James Mackintosh Shaw graduated from Oxford University, and married Eve Grace Woodroffe. Alexander was subsequently killed in action during the Battle of the Somme near Beaumont-Hamel, France on 9th July 1916. His name is commemorated on the memorial to allied soldiers of the First World War at the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery. He was at that time serving in the British Army as a Captain in the 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. See wikipidea for more info on this family under Alexander Croft Shaw. A ww2 medal group of 5 with named condolence slip and box of issue addressed to. 1939-45 Star, Africa Star , Italy Star, France & Germany Star and British War Medal (all unnamed as issued). Box of issue originally addressed to Mrs W. Sugden, 27 Fitzmary Avenue, Westbrook, Margate, Kent, address crossed out and 4 Rosselyn Avenue, N. Chingford, Essex has been hand written on it. Condolence slip named to. Douglas Arthur William Sugden was born in Bristol in 1899. Educated at Radley College. During ww1 he saw Home service with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and the RAF. Post war he saw service with C Company of the ADRIC in Ireland from August 1920 to April 1921 before resigning and rejoining the RAF. He was commissioned as a Flying Officer in Stores Branch of the RAF on 17/12/1921. From 1922-27 he served with No 6 Armoured Car Company in Iraq. Followed by North Weald Station, 47 Sqn in Khartoum and then on the Equipment Staff (Stores Section) of Middle East Command. In 1938-39 he was a Sqaudron Leader with the Home Aircraft Depot. Made Wing Commander on 1/1/1940 he went out to France and was appointed to Lord Gort’s Staff as a liaison officer. He met his future wife Winifred Olga Richards here (she was with the’Hello Happiness’ players entertaining the men). They were married upon his return following evacuation from Dunkirk, in North Chingford. Made Acting Group Captain he was Mentioned in Despatches in the King’s Birthday Honours of 14/6/1945.
