Census 1901 & 1911, photograph of his grave 1945. Charles William Henry Lumbard was born 1884 Barton, Gloucestershire. He is recorded on the 1901 Census as a commercial clerk. His service records are not available on line and are possibly held by the MOD due to being commissioned in 1939. It is probable that he enlisted early 1900s as he is recorded as a Second Corporal in the Somalia lists of 1911. He enlisted into the Army Service Corps and served in Somalia 1908-10. This campaign was against the rebels led by Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, nicknamed the’Mad Mullah’ by the British. From the medal list, only 20 bars were issued to enlisted & NCO’s of the Army Service Corps for this campaign. He landed in France 12/8/1914 as a Serjeant with the 27. Depot Unit of Supplies. He was awarded the D. London Gazette 14 January 1916 (citation published 11 March 1916): For conspicuous good work as Chief Clerk in the office of the Assistant Director of Supplies. He has always displayed great zeal and efficiency and a marked devotion to duty. His long service and good conduct medal was granted when he was a Staff Sergeant. The’Freemason list’ for Singapore in 1920 gives his rank as S. He was granted an emergency commission in September 1939, serving with the 5th. And was discharged from the Army as a Captain 23. November 1945 as he exceeded the age limit. He died shortly afterward, on the 13. December 1945 and is buried Burtree Ford Cemetery, Cowshill, Durham. I was going to keep these but some other interesting item has come up and I need to finance this. With the 80th anniversary of the sinking coming up soon, this is a chance to own the Historically Important medal group awarded to The Captain of the Blue Star Line SS Arandora Star which was sunk by German U-boat U-47 Captained by Ace Gunther Prien. The medals are as follows :- Posthumous Lloyd’s Medal For Bravery at Sea named CAPTAIN. SS ARANDORA STAR 2nd JULY 1940. He was also awarded the Kings Commendation for Brave Conduct at the same time {This is absent}. WW1 Officer Pair named LIEUT. M {Lieutenant Royal Indian Marines} and Mercantile Marine named EDGAR. A Poland Polish Cross of Valour {awarded to him for Officers for the Withdrawal of Polish Troops from France 1940}, Atlantic Star, 1939-45 Star and a War Medal. SELFE on the Pair. Her medal card states PRISCILLA JANE MOULTON nee SELFE. The SS ARANDORA STAR was carrying 1673 people including Crew, British Military Guards German and Italian Prisoners of War and civilian Internees. She was sunk 02/07/1940 with a loss of 826 including Captain Edgar Moulton. He was Posthumously awarded the Lloyds War Medal For Bravery at sea and a German Merchant Navy Prisoner was also Posthumously cited for Heroism. A truly rare medal group and the first time on the market. The only similar medal group i found was this one, but i would say the Arandora Star is rarer. A fine posthumous Kings Commendation, Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea group of seven awarded to Purser R. Clan MacArthur, in August 1943. 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45. Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea. Clan MacArthur, 12th August 1943. Kings Commendation for Brave Conduct. Oval plastic badge, on a blue riband. The Lloyds award with some edge bruising, otherwise good very fine and better (7).
