WW2 Air Crew Europe Star Medal Group Killed in Action Memorial Scroll RAF

An original group of World War Two medals to a Royal Air Force Aircraftman 1st Class who was killed in action on 1st November 1943. The medals were awarded to Arthur Wilson who came from Shildon in County Durham. The Air Crew Europe Star. The original memorial scroll named to Aircraftman 1st Class A. Wilson Royal Air Force with some writing, the medals included and the address for Mrs J Wilson on the reverse. A pre-war photo of Arthur Wilson in suit and tie marked AK1 A Wilson RAF KIA on the reverse in pencil. Arthur Wilson was born in 1921 and he was 22 when he died in 1943. His death was registered in Shrewsbury and he is buried at Shildon Cemetery and is commemorated on St John’s Church Shildon war memorial – photos of the memorial shown above. I’m not sure on the actual action that caused his death but this could be researched. It would have been one of his first sorties due to his rank. The medals come with their original ribbons and they have been mounted on a piece of card. Worthy of more research. Please let me know if you need any additional photos or details. World War Two Casualty Medal Group to 909137 Gunner Ronald Hubert Hall of 426 Battery, 107 (The South Notts Hussars) Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery who was killed in action during the defence of Tobruck on 4th December 1941. Gunner Hall was born in Derby and lived in West Bridgford in Nottingham. Casualty Medal Slip confirming name and the award of 4 medal. Original medal box sent to Mrs F. Hall (Florence Mabel Hall his mother). Gunner Hall was serving with the 426 battery of the 107th Regiment S. A who were an anti aircraft battery. This testimonial is from another soldier who was serving with the regiment at the same time and recalls his experiences at around the time of Gunner Hall’s death. After a spell defending the Suez Canal, the Regiment moved to be part of the Trobruk defences in April 1941. I believe the following events took place during late November and early December 1941. We tried to break out but we got hammered. The German 88s fired airburst and, I dont know, the gun I was on must have been one of the unlucky guns. We had four guns, number one, I was number two, three and four. Everything there was firing just where we were and we started off firing, all of a sudden there was an airburst and I was putting the switches on doing a level with all the bubbles when I saw Bill sat on my right. I said are you alright, he replied that hed been hit in the knee. I looked at him , it was a lot more than a hit in the knee and I got out of the seat to see what I could do and he just went out. We didnt have stretcher bearers, there was nobody there when it came to medical attention. I just dragged him out, laid him down, fetched one of the few medical blokes that were. Then the next round came up, put the switch on and put the range on, old Bill would normally have done that. Then another shell came over and I thought thats close, then I looked round to my left to the two of them that were there, they didnt move. I got up to look at them and both of them had been hit pretty bad , both of them had been killed. All the other guns more or less got away with it. The next round that came over, I was putting the range on, the switch , loading it, I was the only one left and there was no sign of anyone coming, reinforcements or anything, and another round came over and lifted me out of the seat! I went flat on my back and the next thing I knew I was moved out. I finished up in one of the field hospitals that we had but I wasnt actually wounded, only knocked unconscious. Second Lieutenant Keith Penicuik Ewart was born on 26 December 1892 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He enlisted into the 2nd Canadian Divisional Signal Company on 21 January 1915, being attested for the R. On 30 September 1916, and receiving his commission the following month. Second Lieutenant Ewart was killed in action on 4 January 1918 whilst flying a DH4; his observer, Lieutenant A. They are both buried at Niergnies Communal Cemetery, France. Westlake and Ewart both served with 27 Squadron RFC and on the morning of 4 January 1918 took off at 09.50/10.50 from the airfield. It was reported that they were then seen “gliding down from 13,000 feet south-west of Denain in combat with EA (enemy aircraft) on return from bomb run to Denain”. It’s possible that B 1542 was shot down by German ace Wilhelm Reinhard who claimed his seventh victory that day in the area. Both Ewart and Westlake were buried by the Germans at Niergnies – where they are still buried, the only two allied servicemen in the cemetery. 1914-15 Star 110 2. Pair of boxed medals given to Clare Brighthaupt of Sugarloaf PA. Named award shown is serial numbered on edge 60395, includes original box with partial label on end, showing at least the “6″ part of the medal number. Ribbon bar pinned into box, box is fairly clean, hinge is good, a few scuffs is about the extent of what the box has for eriod wear. Comes with his victory medal with Meuse Argonne and Defensive Sector bars, all as clean as the first medal, there is a ribbon for the first medal, no ribbon for the victory. This PA man was a replacement to the Machine Gun section of the 329th Infantry, 83rd Division and then finally to the 131st Infantry Regiment, 33rd Division, in which he was injured. The form shown, with info on this man, is off the net and I do not have a hard copy of it, sorry, but you could print this photo for yourself. ALL ITEMS ARE ORIGINAL AND PERIOD. Pair of medals given to Jacob Mulac of Cleveland, a native of Bohemia, Austro-Hungarian Empire and later Czechoslovakia. Named award shown is serial numbered on edge 56870, or perhaps 58870. Comes with his victory medal with St Mihiel, Meuse Argonne and Defensive bars, all as clean as the first medal, there is a ribbon for the first medal, no ribbon for the victory. Great named medal given to the survivors of Charles DeLeuze of Carnegie PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh, he was a casualty of WWII, connected to the 63rd Infantry Division and the lot includes the medal which is numbered on edge as shown, government engraved, a gold star pin, ribbon bar, patch from the 63rd removed from a scrapbook, and some internet info, this being a nice patched photo of him, info on him from a local researcher, photo of his grave in Arlington I THINK! , not out of a collection, from a PA estate lot when I lived in Pittsburgh. WW2 Medal Group Killed in Action RAF Pilot with Father in Laws WW1 Medals

World War Two RAF Medal Group to a Pilot from 102 Squadron RAFVR who was killed in action. The medals were awarded to 120581 Flying Officer Pilot Donald Pike who was killed in action on 3rd December 1942. His plane was a Halifax II with the registration number W7913 which was part of 102 Squardon who were based in Pocklington in Yorkshire. The aircraft was on a bombing mission to Frankfurt shot down by a German night fighter flown by Uffz Dieter Erichsen of 2/NJG4 over Resteigne. This website link gives some details about the plane and its loss and actually has some photos of the crew of the plane presumably including Donald Pike. Donald is buried along with the remainder of his crew in Florennes Communal Cemetery which is near Charleroi in Belgium. The group includes the Air Crew Europe Star, the 1939-45 Star, the War Medal, the original medal box which was sent to his wife, Mrs D. Pike in Bristol, a dinner programme from the 10 Air Observers Course, 45 Air School in Oudtshoorn in South Africa on Friday 28th November 1941 which has been signed by numerous attendees of the course (this would have been the air observers course that Donald Pike attended) and a Grand Concert Souvenir Programme on board H. Oronsay was later sunk by a U-Boat attack. The group also includes Donald’s Father in Law’s World War One Medals (Dorothy Pike’s farther). The World War One medals to his father in law are named as follows. A good complete group of family medals and ephemera which are worthy of more research. Complete World War Two Medal Group to a Lance. From the 2nd Armoured. Welsh Guards (Guards Armoured Division Reconnaissance and Scouting) who was killed in action. The medals were awarded to 2737430 Lance. Henry Leonard Green came from Bristol and he served with the 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards which formed the Guards Armoured Division Reconnaissance and Scouting – and who was killed in action on 1st September 1944 during the fighting around the town of Arras. He is buried in the London Cemetery and Extension in Longeuval in the Somme region. There is another Welsh Guardsman and several members of the Royal Armoured Corps and the Reconnaissance Corps (Royal Armoured Corps) who were killed in action on this date. This was just before the 100 mile in one day advance when the battalion was the first unit to liberate Brussels on 3rd September 1944. The 2nd Armoured Battalion Welsh Guards were part of the 6th Guards Armoured Brigade and they were the leading battalion of the Guards Armoured. The 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards was originally an infantry unit but later converted to an armoured role, becoming the divisional scouting and reconnaissance unit of the Guards Armoured Division. This division landed in France on 29 June 1944 and fought its way across North West Europe. It participated in many of the Normandy breakout battles, Operation Market Garden, the advance on and subsequent crossing of the Rhine and the drive into Germany itself. They were equipped with Cromwell and Stuart Tanks. I have attached a photo showing some of the men of the battalion with their Cromwell Tank in June 1944 above. The group includes the original medal box sent to his father, the medal slip insert confirming his name and service number and the award of the 4 medals, the defence medal, war medal, 1939-45 star and the France and Germany Star. The medals include their original envelope packets. The box, slip and medals are all in very good condition. The medals have rarely been taken out of their packets and are in mint condition.
