1958 CANADA World War II ROYAL CANADIAN HUSSARS CAP Badge Vintage Medal i98237

Item: i98237 Authentic Badge of. Connaught’s Royal Canadian Hussars Cap Badge 1958 White Metal Medal Badge 44mm x 50mm (9.78 grams) VI D. C. R. Half eagle left, man’s arm with sword right, crossed swords behind, banner below. SCULLY LTD Badge Notes: This unit was the 6th Duke of Connaught’s Royal Canadian Hussars. Amalgamated in 1958 with the 17th DYRCH into the present day Royal Canadian Hussars (Montreal). The Royal Canadian Hussars (Montreal) (abbreviated as RCH) is an armoured reconnaissance regiment of the Primary Reserve in the Canadian Armed Forces. Its mission consists of supporting the Regular Force in doing peacetime tasks, which include deployments, peacekeeping, and supporting the civilian authorities. The Royal Canadian Hussars (Montreal) derives from the Montreal Volunteer Cavalry (formed in the late eighteenth century). The present regiment perpetuates five cavalry units and one armoured unit: the Royal Montreal Cavalry, the 5th Dragoons, the 6th Duke of Connaught’s Royal Canadian Hussars (6th DCRCH), the 11th Argenteuil Rangers, the 17th Duke of York’s Royal Canadian Hussars (17th DYRCH), and the 1st Motor Machine Gun Brigade. The regiment received its second guidon on December 3, 1974, the 100th anniversary of regimental status and its 135th year as a Canadian cavalry unit. One of the Hussars’ former Commanding Officers, Lieutenant-Colonel (Retd) Roman Jarymowycz, O. Later became Dean and Director of the Militia Command and Staff Course, serving as an instructor for 15 years. From 1986 to 1990, the regiment won the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps Buchanan Trophy (the best armour unit in the Eastern and Atlantic Areas) a total of five times and the Worthington Trophy (the best armour unit in Canada) a total of three times. In August 1990, the regiment commanded and formed the headquarters and one complete squadron for the first-of-its-kind Militia brigade-level exercise. Exercise En Guard was held at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown and included the four armoured units of Secteur de l’Est (RBSE). Shortly afterwards, in September 1990, the regiment sent a 21-man contingent to Cyprus augmenting the 12. Régiment blindé du Canada on its United Nations peacekeeping tour of duty. Since 1990 the regiment has deployed troops on UN missions in both Haiti and Bosnia, as well as providing personnel during the Oka crisis and the ice storm of 1998. The unit has also continued to participate in the Noble Lion exercises as part of Land Force Quebec Area. On April 1, 1997, The Royal Canadian Hussars (Montreal) became the establishment armoured regiment (tank) for the newly formed 34th Canadian Brigade Group (34 CBG). E organization falls under the command of 34 CBG. In late 2003, the mission of the RCH was changed to fit the restructuring plan of the Canadian Forces Land Force Command. The troops were converted back to a role of armoured reconnaissance. The regiment comprises two squadrons: B Squadron (combat troops) and C&S Squadron (command and support). On May 1, 2005, the RCH received its third guidon. In 2007 seven members of the RCH were deployed to Afghanistan as part of Joint Task Force Afghanistan (JTF AFG) Rotation 4, which included approximately 2330 Canadian Forces members from the Quebec region. From November 2010 to July 2011, six members or the RCH were again deployed in the Kandahar region of Afghanistan as part of the Joint Task Force Afghanistan Rotation 10. Canada is a country, consisting of ten provinces and t hree territories, in the northern part of the continent of North America. It extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometres (3.85 million square miles) in total, making it the world’s second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area. Canada’s common border with the United States forms the world’s longest land border. Canada is sparsely populated overall, the majority of its land territory being dominated by forest and tundra as well as the mountain range of the Rocky Mountains; about four-fifths of the population live near to the southern border. The majority of Canada has a cold or severely cold winter climate, but southerly areas are warm in summer. The land now called Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French colonies were established on the region’s Atlantic coast. As a consequence of various conflicts, the United Kingdom gained and lost North American territories until left, in the late 18th century, with what mostly comprises Canada today. Pursuant to the British North America Act, on July 1, 1867, three colonies joined to form the autonomous federal Dominion of Canada. This began an accretion of provinces and territories to the new self-governing Dominion. In 1931, Britain granted Canada near total independence with the Statute of Westminster 1931 and full sovereignty was attained when the Canada Act 1982 severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the British parliament. Canada is a federal parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II being the current head of state. The country is officially bilingual at the federal level. It is one of the world’s most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries, with a population of approximately 35 million as of 2015. Its advanced economy is the eleventh largest in the world, relying chiefly upon its abundant natural resources and well-developed international trade networks. Canada’s long and complex relationship with the United States has had a significant impact on its economy and culture. Canada is a developed country and one of the wealthiest in the world, with the tenth highest nominal per capita income globally, and the eighth highest ranking in the Human Development Index. It ranks among the highest in international measurements of government transparency, civil liberties, quality of life, economic freedom, and education. Canada is a Commonwealth Realm member of the Commonwealth of Nations, a member of the Francophonie, and part of several major international and intergovernmental institutions or groupings including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the G8, the Group of Ten, the G20, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. Silver Plated Horse Hoof Trophy Box. 11th Hussars WW1 War Horse Tribute Medal

Very rare WW1 cavalry horse hoof converted to a tobacco box by specialist taxidermists, Rowland Ward Ltd of Piccadally, London. The hoof has silver plate mounts with realistic horse hair moulding. There is a spacious internal box for storing tobacco and beneath the lid there is a match striker. The hoof has a silver plated horseshoe. The engraving on the lid reads. “LATCHKEY” 11TH HUSSARS EUROPEAN WAR AUGUST 15TH 1914 – OCTOBER 8TH 1916. Weight: 764.7 gm. Taxidermists: Rowland Ward Ltd. 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own): was a cavalry regiment of the British Army established in 1715. During WW1 the regiment landed in France as part of the 1st Cavalry Brigade in August 1914 for service on the Western Front with the British Expeditionary Force. It appears from the date engraved on the lid that “Latchkey” was included in this first landing. The regiment took part in the Great Retreat and took part in a cavalry charge which led to the capture of 8 enemy guns at Nery in September 1914. It also saw action at the Battle of Messines in October 1914 and the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915. Again from the engraved dates on the lid, “Latchkey” it appears that was killed on October 8th 1916. Summary: Very rarely do these taxidermy horse hoofs come onto the market relating to real life “War Horses” from WW1. This horse, Latchkey, most likely saw many battles and was involved in numerous cavalry charges. The horse and this hoof will have experienced the horrors and the mud of the World War One trenches and it is poignant just holding it. Clearly he was also a well-loved horse for his hooves to be saved and taken back home to be converted into lasting mementos. World War Two Casualty Medal Group to 909137 Gunner Ronald Hubert Hall of 426 Battery, 107 (The South Notts Hussars) Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery who was killed in action during the defence of Tobruck on 4th December 1941. Gunner Hall was born in Derby and lived in West Bridgford in Nottingham. Casualty Medal Slip confirming name and the award of 4 medal. Original medal box sent to Mrs F. Hall (Florence Mabel Hall his mother). Gunner Hall was serving with the 426 battery of the 107th Regiment S. A who were an anti aircraft battery. This testimonial is from another soldier who was serving with the regiment at the same time and recalls his experiences at around the time of Gunner Hall’s death. After a spell defending the Suez Canal, the Regiment moved to be part of the Trobruk defences in April 1941. I believe the following events took place during late November and early December 1941. We tried to break out but we got hammered. The German 88s fired airburst and, I dont know, the gun I was on must have been one of the unlucky guns. We had four guns, number one, I was number two, three and four. Everything there was firing just where we were and we started off firing, all of a sudden there was an airburst and I was putting the switches on doing a level with all the bubbles when I saw Bill sat on my right. I said are you alright, he replied that hed been hit in the knee. I looked at him , it was a lot more than a hit in the knee and I got out of the seat to see what I could do and he just went out. We didnt have stretcher bearers, there was nobody there when it came to medical attention. I just dragged him out, laid him down, fetched one of the few medical blokes that were. Then the next round came up, put the switch on and put the range on, old Bill would normally have done that. Then another shell came over and I thought thats close, then I looked round to my left to the two of them that were there, they didnt move. I got up to look at them and both of them had been hit pretty bad , both of them had been killed. All the other guns more or less got away with it. The next round that came over, I was putting the range on, the switch , loading it, I was the only one left and there was no sign of anyone coming, reinforcements or anything, and another round came over and lifted me out of the seat! I went flat on my back and the next thing I knew I was moved out. I finished up in one of the field hospitals that we had but I wasnt actually wounded, only knocked unconscious. A complete and interesting group worthy of more research. Please let me know if you need any additional photos or details. Please see my other listings of British and foreign Medals and Militaria. A fine and quite scarce set of medals to Richard Lewis Webb including. 1 Yorkshire Hussars Imperial Yoemanry 1901 1902 South Africa Medal inscribed 35812 Pte R. Webb109th Coy Imp: Yeo. 2 South Africa Medal with 5 bars, inscribed as the Yorkshire Medal. 3 1914-19 WW1 Medal inscribed 7168 CPL R. 4 1914-15 Star inscribed 7168 1. 5 1914-18 Medal inscribed 7168 CPL R. 6 1939-45 Defence Medal, not inscribed. 7 1939-45 Medal, not inscribed. From the little research I’ve done, Richard Lewis Webb was born in Middlesex in 1882, his occupation listed as Electrician, a somewhat hazardous job at the time one would assume! He served in the 109th during the 2nd Boer War, then enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps during WW1. He was an aircraft mechanic I believe who rose through the ranks of mechanics from 2nd class to 1st class, then chief mechanic. The medals are in as found condition, the ribbon of the SA Medal is very tattered and not connected to the medal and bars. The medals themselves are in good original condition however some of the ribbons are quite worn. Please judge by the photos, they are a good indication of condition.
