Set Of 5 NAMED Medals, Defence & War Medal, Italy, Africa & 1939-45 Stars. Amazing collection of 5 war medals all issued to one owner, D. Very rare to find all of these medals together and named to the same person. Note – bought as a set many years ago, writing on the top left has a slight error on the number, but 233508 is the correct one, as assured by the printed number on each medal. Date – 1945, Campaign – Second World War 1939-44, Branch of Service – British & Commonwealth Forces, Ribbon – Narrow red stripe on the centre, with a narrow white stripe on either side, broad red stripes at either side and two intervening stripes of blue, Metal – Cupro-nickel, Size – 36mm. Description – Obverse depicts effigy of King George VI, crowned and facing left. Circumscribed with “Georgivs VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX ET INDIAE IMP:” (George VI, omnipotent King of Great Britain and Emperor of India). Designed and marked by Percy Metcalfe below the truncated neck of the effigy. The reverse shows a triumphant lion standing on the body of a double-headed dragon. The dragon’s heads are those of an eagle and a dragon, to signify the principal occidental and oriental enemies during the Second World War (Axis powers). At the top, just to the right of the centre are the tears “1939″ and “1945″ in two lines. The initials “ECRP” of designer Edward Carter Preston are near the rim at the 9 o’clock position. All full time personnel of the armed forces wherever they were serving, so long as they had served for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945 were eligible for this medal. It was granted in addition to the campaign Stars and the Defence medal. A few categories of civilians, such as war correspondents and ferry pilots who had flown in operational theatres, also qualified. Named on the edge of medal (pictured). Description- Obverse deprives the uncrowned effigy of King George VI, circumscribed “Georgivs VI D:G:BR:MN:REX F:D:IND:IMR” (George VI, By the grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India). P, Humphrey Paget the designer. The reverse depicts two lions flanking an oak sap crowned with the dates at the sides “1939″ & “1945″ and wavy lines representing the sea below. The words “The Defence Medal” appear in the exergue. P, but a different designer to the front; Harold Parker. It has a non-swivelling straight bar suspended which is attached to the medal with a single-toe claw mount and a pin through the upper edge of the medal. Awarded to service personnel for 3 years service at home or 6 months service overseas in territories subjected to air attack or otherwise closely threatened. Personnel of Anti-Aircraft Command, RAF ground crews, dominion forces stationed in the UK, the Home Guard, Civil Defence, NationalFire Service and many other civilian units qualified for this medal. The medal was generally issued unnamed in cupro-nickel, but the Canadian version was struck in silver. The british House of Commonw decided that Second World War campaign medals awarded to British Forces would be issued unnamed. Medals awarded to Australians, Indians and South Africans were impressed with the recipients name & details. Therefore this particular medal must be from the three places aforementioned, possibly South Africa or Australia. More details on D. F Brown could be found using soldier search websites etc. Named Italy Star Medal. Description – The six-pointed star has a circular has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by a crown and inscribed “The Italy Star” round the foot. Awarded for operational service on land in Italy, Sicily, Greece, Yugoslavia, the Aegean area and Dodecanese islands, Corsica, Sardinia and Elba at any time between 11 June 1943 and 8 May 1945. Medal is detached from ribbon as you can see from the pictures above. Named Africa Star Medal. Campaign – Africa 1940-43, Branch of service – British and Commonwealth Forces, Ribbon – Pale buff symbolising the sand of the desert, with a broad red central stripe, a dark blue stripe on the left and a light blue stripe on the right symbolising the three services, Metal – bronze. Description – The six-pointed star has a circular centre with the GRI/VI monogram, surmounted by a crown and inscribed “The Africa Star” round the door. Awarded for the entry into an operational area in North Africa between 10 June 1940 (the date of Italy’s declaration of war) and 12 May 1943 (the end of operation in North Africa), but service in Abyssinia (Ethiopia), Somaliland, Eritrea and Malta also qualified for the award. The first in a series of 8 bronze stars issued for service in the Second World War, it was awarded to personnel who had completed 6 months service in specified operational commands overseas, between Sept 3 1939 and Aug 15 1945c though in certain cases the minimum period was shortened. Any service curtailed by death, injury or capture also qualified, as did the award of a decoration or a mention in despatches. Any questions, feel free to message me. All of the above is hand typed, apologies if any typos. All information is from a reliable medal collecting book I own. CD Rom Army Roll Of Honour World War Two 1939-45

CD Rom Army Roll Of Honour World War Two 1939-45

VERY SPECIAL OFFER PRICE. ARMY ROLL OF HONOUR 1939-45. SOLDIERS DIED IN WORLD WAR TWO. (WO304) Version 2.0. For the first time in its entirety, in either printed or electronic format, this definitive resource (which has been housed in encrypted form at the Public Record Office at Kew since 1949) has been published as a fully-searchable CD ROM. Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19 revolutionised our understanding of casualties from that conflict. This new CD ROM tells us what happened to the generation which followed them. The creation of an Army “Roll of Honour”, preserved in the Public Record Office under the reference WO 304, was first discussed in the War Office in January 1944, as a direct result of the failure of accurate lists being published in the national press. It was soon realised that a single roll of honour would enable the War Office, units of the British Army, and other organisations, to obtain data concerning casualties from a single source, and so be less time consuming than consulting a variety of other records. The “Roll of Honour” was compiled between the end of 1944 and March, 1949. It was estimated to have taken 40,800 clerical staff hours to compile and produce. The data for the roll was punched on to card, each hole representing a certain item of information. The cards were fed into a Hollerith Machine (an early type of data processor), and the eventual roll was produced on an A3 paper print out. The information captured in the roll represents that which the War Office felt appropriate for their own purposes, and the information which the Imperial War Graves (now Commonwealth) Commission desired, and that which could be made public. Information on the original roll is contained in both plain and coded text. Apart from surname and forenames, army service number and date of death, all other information: (rank, first unit served in, unit serving in at time of death, place of birth, place of domicile and place of death), were all given numerical codes. Individuals found in the roll died between 1 September 1939 and 31 December 1946, and also included are those deaths in service which were non-attributable natural causes, etc. As well as those, of course, who were killed in action or who died of wounds or disease. The roll does not include’disgraceful’ deaths, i. Men executed for capital crimes whilst in the army, for example. By decoding WO 304 and putting it into a fully searchable database and plain text, the original “Roll of Honour” can now be used and understood by researchers, genealogists and military historians alike. Searches can be executed for: Regiment or Branch of Army at 1st September 1939, Regiment or Branch of Army at death, surnames, Christian name(s), initial(s), born (major towns or county), place of domicile (major towns or county), army number, rank, theatre of war or place where fatal wound was sustained or death occurred, decorations, and by date. Searches can be made by one or as many elements as you wish. For example, you could search for every soldier who died during the Western Europe Campaign 1944/45; or in North Africa or At Sea or indeed in any of the other 31 Theatres of War or places classified. It is even possible to search for all privates called William, who died in Burma. As with Soldiers Died in the Great War CD-ROM, you will have at your fingertips data that would have been months of toil – and a very hefty card index system to produce – on the screen in a matter of seconds. In fact, if you can read and type with one finger, however slowly, you will be able to use this database to its full potential. After completing your search you can view and sort the data on screen and print out your results. A’Wild Card’ facility has been incorporated within the search engine that will further enhance the location of an individual’s record. We have included the facility to print out a full colour memorial scroll for any casualty on this database creating a fine keepsake, for families and future generations, of a soldier’s sacrifice. CD-Rom Minimum System Requirements: The minimum system requirement suggested to run this CD-ROM is a Pentium (or equivalent) PC, 12X CD-ROM drive, 64MB of available RAM, SVGA display (thousands of colours or more), 48MB free hard disk space and WindowsT 7, 8, 10 or VISTA Recommended System Requirements: The recommended system requirement is a Pentium III PC with 48X CD-ROM drive, 512MB of RAM and an SVGA monitor. El Alamein 1942 – Afrika Corps Germans in Panzer IV surrender to British Tommies. The situation in North Africa was already turbulent long before Monty and Rommel turned up. In June 1940, Benito Mussolini – after years of blustering, strutting and procrastinating – finally joined the war. With Hitler apparently winning in Europe, Mussolini thought this the perfect time to expand his existing colonies in Africa, such as Italian Libya. Unfortunately for Il Duce, the task he set in Africa was easier said than done. Just across the border of Italian Libya lay Egypt, which was effectively controlled and protected by the Allies. They jealously guarded the Suez Canal, a crucial pathway for supplies and communications to the Middle East. The Brits in Egypt boldly invaded Italian Libya first, setting into motion a tug-of-war with the Italians counter-attacking and pushing into Egypt, and the British then counter-counter-attacking with maximum force, eventually crushing the Italian 10th Army. The Germans had to be called in to bail the Italians out. He arrived in Libya to lead the newly-formed Afrika Korps against the Allies. Impulsive and aggressive, he instigated the Siege of Tobruk in 1941 – an attempt to take the fortified port city of Tobruk which lasted 241 hellish days. The Allied garrison held out in Tobruk, despite the squalid, sticky, flea-infested conditions, proudly calling themselves the’Rats of Tobruk’. The siege was finally relieved by Operation Crusader, in which Rommel’s forces were pushed back by the Eighth Army – a diverse new force which included soldiers from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and India. Monty and Rommel’s most decisive confrontation was the Second Battle of El Alamein in Egypt, which ran from October through to November of 1942. In one skirmish alone during the battle, more than 15 enemy tanks were destroyed by these guns. All in all, the Allies had a huge trump card in the form of their intact supply route, while Rommel had over-extended his supply lines and was feeling the pinch. El Alamein was an inferno, beginning with an almighty, WW1-style artillery bombardment by Monty which one soldier described as turning the entire horizon into a’fount of orange and blood-red flame, stabbing at the sky’. Out of the horror, came a victory for the Eighth Army that changed the face of the North Africa campaign. Churchill famously said,’Before Alamein, we never had a victory. After Alamein, we never had a defeat’. Though Rommel retreated to battle on in Tunisia, this was the watershed moment for the Allies and a huge morale boost for the Allies. Auctiva gets you noticed!
