Maxime Weygand : born in Brussels on January 21, 1867, died in Paris on January 28, 1965, is a French general officer, member of the French Academy. He played a major role during the two world wars. Marshal Foch’s right-hand man at the end of the First World War, he was commissioned, on November 11, 1918, to read the conditions of the armistice in Rethondes to the German delegation. Named by Paul Reynaud May 19, 1940 commander-in-chief of the French army to replace General Gamelin, he can not prevent defeat at the Battle of France. He was then the first to declare himself an armistice supporter (as in the First World War) with Germany. On June 17, 1940, he becomes Minister of War of the Petain government, prepares the signing of the Armistice Treaty on June 22, then participates for two months in the Vichy government, before being appointed on September 4, 1940 commander for Africa. North where he creates and organizes the army of Africa in relation with the American and British services.
