Bronze French art deco medal with its box signed by : Pierre TURIN. You won the biggest battle of history – November 12 – 1918 – FOCH maréchal. Vous avez gagné la plus grande bataille de l’histoire 12 Novembre 1918 – FOCH. Assigned To : Général Maxime WEYGAND. Maxime Weygand : born in Brussels on January 21, 1867, died in Paris on January 28, 1965, is a French general officer, member of the French Academy. He played a major role during the two world wars. Marshal Foch’s right-hand man at the end of the First World War, he was commissioned, on November 11, 1918, to read the conditions of the armistice in Rethondes to the German delegation. Named by Paul Reynaud May 19, 1940 commander-in-chief of the French army to replace General Gamelin, he can not prevent defeat at the Battle of France. He was then the first to declare himself an armistice supporter (as in the First World War) with Germany. On June 17, 1940, he becomes Minister of War of the Petain government, prepares the signing of the Armistice Treaty on June 22, then participates for two months in the Vichy government, before being appointed on September 4, 1940 commander for Africa. North where he creates and organizes the army of Africa in relation with the American and British services. Recalled and relieved by Petain of his command under German pressure in November 1941, he was placed under house arrest in a villa in Provence where he received a letter from President Roosevelt asking him to continue his action. Arrested by the Gestapo on the eve of the invasion of the southern zone by the Germans on 11 November 1942, he was deported to Germany and interned until the end of the war. Arrested on his return from Germany, accused of high treason and imprisoned by the Gaullists, he benefits from a no place, becomes the defender of the memory of Marshal Pétain, then the support of supporters of French Algeria during the war.
