Fantastic attributed group of full-size WW2 medals including the rare Arctic Star and associated Russian awards of gratitude for the perilous Arctic Convoys and additional ephemera. These were awarded to AB (Anti Submarine) PJX 329141 William Woodward Royal Navy. His completed original certificate of service reveals so much: he served on numerous ships and shore establishments notably destroyers:HMS D03 ICARUS, HMS L84 HURSLEY and HMS L14 BEAUFORT. He served from 21st Apr 1942 to 24th May 1946. Medals are: 1939-45, Atlantic (with F&G bar), Italy, Arctic Stars and War Medal. Not mounted with original loose ribbons packets. Velvet presentation boxed Ushakov medal with named booklet to William also 40th and 70th Anniversary medals with named certificates and letters. Original large colour picture of William in his RN uniform with his acoustics (ASDIC) trade badge. His fathers WW1 war medal has been altered to have a ring suspension and chain which he wore around his neck. Two post cards of the ICARUS one with writing on the reverse. Lots of letters from William to the MOD/Russian embassy and vice versa, confirming entitlement to Arctic Star, Emblem (not in lot) and veterans badge (not in lot) etc. Lots of Information from papers and the internet. Amazing WW2 genuine Arctic Convoy full size group of 5 plus two Russian awards to S/T William Barker RN. Churchill called it “the worst journey in the world” The Q ships made perilous trips sending supplies to Russia at the mercy of wolf packs and aircraft. Beautifully framed contemporary 1939-45, Atlantic (F&G bar) Burma Stars, and War medal with original ribbons. On reverse the recipient has written names of each medal and but D-Day for his F&G bar. Medal Office official 100% genuine issue Arctic Star in black presentation box labelled to SSX30228 W Barker. Once you have seen one of these you’ll spot the rubbish that has proliferated as copies. Mr Barker was invited (see envelope and original official embassy letter) to the Russian Embassy London to receive the Medal of Ushakov, this is boxed in plush velvet presentation case and a separate certificate maroon booklet named to William Barker the medal, booklet and certificate are numbered 2114. He also received the 70th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-45. This in a presentation case and has 2 certificate in his name and numbered 0318078. Wonderful complete group to a man who more than did his bit. Worthy of more research and would be a great addition to a collection or as an investment as Arctic Stars with complete groups including Russian awards will very hard to find.
