Unusual WW1 & Police Medal Imposters Group Gallipoli Veteran. 1915 & 1914 Stars 2/10. 1915 Original Star Trio to 2520 Cpl H. 2 x Original 1914 stars also (crudely) named to 2520 Cpl H. 1 x Original 1902 Metropolitan Police Coronation Medal privately named to Constable H. 1 x Original WW2 era Territorial Efficiency Medal named to Gnr O. 2 x Original WW2 era Royal Artillery Shoulder titles. 2 x Original WW2 era Royal Artillery Collar Badges. 1 x Set of WW2 era fibre identity discs named to O. I called this medal group an imposters group because, according to my research Cpl Perrys only official entitlement is to the 1915 trio which are all honestly named to him in the correct style. The 1914 stars are totally original issue but have been erased to the reversed and then haphazardly stamped with Perrys details when you compare the thickness of these medals to an original 1914 or 1915 star its fairly obvious its thinner due to skimming. Having one erroneously named 1914 star should be strange enough but having two is a mystery one of the two stars in the group has a score line / groove in the front of the design and a small amount of darker toning around the wreath area this is the only reason I can think of why hed of replaced this star for a non-damaged one. Its not wish to cast doubt on the credibility of the gentleman concerned but it would seem that the 1914 stars scenario wasnt his first misdemeanour with medal entitlement as can be seen in the pictures there is also a 1902 Edward VII police coronation medal curiously H. Perry was a police officer with R Division of the Metropolitan Police during the Edwardian era (and the official log books back this up), however his service reckoned from Sept 1904 to Feb 1907 which is clearly outside of the qualification period meaning he cannot be entitled to this medal either! This police medal is neatly but privately named and the first thing that stands out is that he is referred to as Constable on the medal but every other police medal like this Ive seen like this the correct naming should be PC. Cpl Perry was undoubtedly a brave gentlemen and certainly served his regiment well during the Gallipoli campaign as to why he would want to embellish his career we will probably never know when I acquired this group the police medal and the 1914 star were mounted on a bar along with the silver war and victory medal so he clearly felt a sense of entitlement to the decorations also with them was an original Military Medal ribbon and a Kings South Africa medal ribbon so who knows what other medals he planned on awarding himself! With the mysterious element to this group out of the way I can present some information which can be verified as fact according to the official documentation. According to Cpl Perrys medal index card he first entered the war on 09/08/1915 in the Theatre of war 2B This code relates to Gallipoli in the Dardanelles and the 2/10. Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment was known to have landed at Sulva Bay on this date its believed the battalion saw action the following day on the 10. This MIC also shows he is fully entitled to the 1915 Star, Silver war medal and Victory Medal. Further to this he is also entitled to the Silver War Badge number 87785 and there is another MIC for this it shows he enlisted on 18/09/14 and was discharged on 19/07/1916 with the cause of discharge being paragraph 392 of Kings Regulation (no longer fit for active service). At the time of his discharge he was serving with the 9. A, 2 x shoulder titles, 2 x collar dogs and a set of fibre discs named to O. Perry Im guessing that this man must be the son or nephew of Cpl H. All of the items within this sale are fresh to the market and to the best of my knowledge have never been out of the family I acquired them from a deceaseds family members estate. The condition of the pieces contained in this grouping are generally good the 1915 star trio show a normal level of wear to the surface and toning across all the medal the victory medal has some dark staining to the gilt surface which mostly affects the back each of these medals are on original silk ribbons. The two 1914 stars are original but as mentioned have been erased and renamed these are both on original silk ribbons as mentioned above one has a score line in the metal to the front both have toned dark. The bronze police medal is an original issue medal (issued unnamed) but has been privately named the surface has toned dark this is on an original silk ribbon. The Territorial silver medal is original with correct naming normal level of wear and tarnish for its age. The badges and identity discs are all in good order almost certainly these shoulder and collar badges belonged to Gnr O. This is a really interesting group of medals and certainly worthy of further research if youre a serious medal collector I expect youll consider the two 1914 stars as novelty value only on account of them not being awarded to the gentleman concerned but as I mentioned they are original, genuine stars and must hold a value in that respect. Please study the pictures provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the items in this sale of you have any further questions please ask and Ill be happy to oblige. Electronic copies of the MIC, SWB card and Police register can be emailed on request when the sale is finalised or alternatively these are easily obtainable in the public domain.
