RARE WW1 1st GOLD STAR MOTHERS PILGRIMAGE OFFICIAL NAMED NUMBERED MEDAL MISSOURI

Rare, medal PILGRIMAGE OF GOLD STAR MOTHERS. Measures approximately 1 5/8″ across at the name tag, and the medal measures approximately 7/8″ across at the widest. The name tag reads, in raised letters, Mrs. The medal is numbered 3318 on the reverse along with the hallmark of Bailey Banks and Biddle. A finely made piece! The name tag portion is tarnished and has a number of black spots. The little name plate is bent upwards in the center — not creased so it could probably be straightened. The ribbon is in poor condition — split in several places, faded and soiled. The medal shows moderate wear and tarnish with surface dirt and some black spots, with a large one on the internal angle of the star on the left. In March 1929, eleven years after World War I, the U. Congress passed a law authorizing the use of government funds to pay for mothers and widows of fallen veterans (“Gold Star” mothers and widows) to visit their loved ones buried on the battlefields of Europe. This unprecedented program honoring the “Gold Star” mothers and widows was entrusted to the Quartermaster Corps for implementation. Some 6,693 Gold Star mothers and war widows made the pilgrimage abroad. This is a hobby, not a living, so I try to keep it fun, otherwise why do it. _gsrx_vers_827 GS 7.0.13 (827). WW1 Turkish war medal (Gallipoli Star), maker marked BB & Co -Enamel version

With intack pin Marker marked B. During WWI, British and Commonwealth Forces called this The Gallipoli Star. The Germans and Austrians called it the Der Eisner Halbmond (The Iron Crescent). When the Sultan Mehmed V created this decoration in March 1915, he named it simply the Harp Madalysi (War Medal). Its likely that this decoration was inspired by the Iron Cross, awarded by the Ottoman Empires German Allies. Like the Iron Cross First Class, It was worn on the breast pocket. Unlike the Iron Cross, it had only one class. By the Sultans decree, it was bestowed upon those persons who show gallantry and sacrifice, without differentiating any rank and position/title. These persons can be either nationals of the Sublime Ottoman State or allied forces and navies and voluntary nursing units and public servants and employees within the armies and navies. At the center is the Sultans Tughra a sort of royal cypher and below it the Islamic year 1333 (1915). In April of 1915 The Allies launched an invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula. By the time it was over in January 1916, both sides had suffered heavily; Over 141,000 Allied casualties and 251,000 Turks. It was during this period that the decoration became associated with Gallipoli. Actually, it could be awarded for actions occurring from the start of the war, and continued to be awarded until the end of the war. These were highly sought after by Australian and New Zealand troops in the middle east generally taken from POW or the dead as souvenirs. Becoming hard to find these days in this condition. ORIGINAL WORLD WAR I UNITED STATES ARMY VICTORY MEDAL, SILVER CITATION STAR, MEUSE ARGONNE & DEFENSIVE SECTOR BARS, W/ FULL WRAP BROOCH. RIBBON DRAPE TESTED UV NEGATIVE AS SHOWN IN PHOTO #12. The World War I Victory Medal is a service medal of the United States military which was first created in 1919, designed by James Earle Fraser. The medal was originally intended to be created due to an act of the United States Congress, however the bill authorizing the medal never passed, leaving the service departments to create the award through general orders. The United States Army published orders authorizing the World War I Victory Medal in April 1919 and the U. Navy followed in June of that same year. Known until 1947 simply as the Victory Medal, the World War I Victory Medal was awarded to any member of the U. Military who had served in the armed forces between the following dates in the following locations. 6 April 1917 to 11 November 1918 for any military service. 12 November 1918, to 5 August 1919 for service in European Russia. 23 November 1918, to 1 April 1920 for service with the American Expeditionary Force Siberia. The front of the bronze medal features a winged Victory holding a shield and sword on the front. The back of the bronze medal features “The Great War For Civilization” in all capital letters curved along the top of the medal. Curved along the bottom of the back of the medal are six stars, three on either side of the center column of seven staffs wrapped in a cord. The top of the staff has a round ball on top and is winged on the side. The staff is on top of a shield that says “U” on the left side of the staff and “S” on the right side of the staff. On left side of the staff it lists one World War I Allied country per line: France, Italy, Serbia, Japan, Montenegro, Russia, and Greece. On the right side of the staff the Allied country names read: Great Britain, Belgium, Brazil, Portugal, Rumania (spelled with a U instead of an O as it is spelled now), and China.
