WW I GOLD STAR Mothers Pilgrimage MEDAL Bronze 1930 Tiffany & Co #316

The item up for sale is a vintage, original Gold Star Mother’s Pilgrimage Medal. With ribbon(ribbon is still wrapped). Reverse reads “Gold Star Pilgrimage to the Battlefields of the World War” with the logo for United States Lines. These were issued for a very interesting program which the US government provided for an ocean voyage to Europe for women who had sons killed in action during the First World War so they could visit the sight of their graves. I believe this program was also for war widows. From what I found online, 6,654 women participated. The program ran from 1930 until 1933. This medal is numbered 316numbered along the edge: “bronze m 316″. Manufactured by Tiffany & Co. Measures 1-1/2 in diameter. Medal is bronze with gold star. It weighs 1.11 oz. Medal is in Excellent condition. Some light wear, spots of patina. Ribbon is in Very Good condition. Splitting and fraying from age in spots(particularly on the blue part of the ribbon near where it is attached to the medal). The white is yellowing a bit with age. Overall, a really good looking medal. Answers to questions usually take 24 hours due to work schedule. Sorry for any inconveniences this may cause, therefore please ask questions early. WW1 Gold Star Mothers and Widows Pilgrimage Medals and Photo Collection

After WWI, and specifically in 1929, an act of Congress facilitated organized pilgrimages to the grave sites of fallen U. Government paid the travel expenses for widows and mothers with the first group of pilgrims embarking on their journey in May of 1930. This is a collection of items from one such family’s pilgrimage. This collection was found grouped together and includes. Pilgrimage of Mothers and Widows Gold Star medal. Box in which medal was seated, marked Tiffany & Company on the front. Note that the medal itself is back-stamped B. 41 and not Tiffany. I don’t know how the two relate. An enameled picture frame with a soldier depicted. In Ohio with patent dates of 1917 and 1918. Two small enameled pins, one with a heart and one with a star. These photos were found under an interior flap in the Tiffany box. Because they were found together, they should be kept together. I do not want to separate and sell any of these items separately. Everything appears to be in very good, original condition. The Gold Star ribbon and the box do show some staining/soiling as can be seen. That is as much as I can tell you about these items. If you have any questions or need additional photos, please let me know. Thank you for looking. Rare, medal PILGRIMAGE OF GOLD STAR MOTHERS. Measures approximately 1 5/8″ across at the name tag, and the medal measures approximately 7/8″ across at the widest. The name tag reads, in raised letters, Mrs. The medal is numbered 3318 on the reverse along with the hallmark of Bailey Banks and Biddle. A finely made piece! The name tag portion is tarnished and has a number of black spots. The little name plate is bent upwards in the center — not creased so it could probably be straightened. The ribbon is in poor condition — split in several places, faded and soiled. The medal shows moderate wear and tarnish with surface dirt and some black spots, with a large one on the internal angle of the star on the left. In March 1929, eleven years after World War I, the U. Congress passed a law authorizing the use of government funds to pay for mothers and widows of fallen veterans (“Gold Star” mothers and widows) to visit their loved ones buried on the battlefields of Europe. This unprecedented program honoring the “Gold Star” mothers and widows was entrusted to the Quartermaster Corps for implementation. Some 6,693 Gold Star mothers and war widows made the pilgrimage abroad. This is a hobby, not a living, so I try to keep it fun, otherwise why do it. _gsrx_vers_827 GS 7.0.13 (827).
