A genuine, fullsize WW1 1914 Star trio to Able Seaman William Barclay of Anson battalion, Royal Naval Division, He was Killed in Action 2nd May 1915 at Gallipoli. Also included is a letter dated 1982 written by Joe Murray the author of’Gallipoli 1915 How i Saw it’ who served with the Hood battalion written to a relative of William Barclay that mentions the 2nd May as well as further details of the RND in Gallipoli. 1914 Star – C4/1819 W. British War and Victory medal – C. Some marks on the reverse of the Victory medal. Comes with original ribbons William Barclay from Bridgeton, born 4/11/1889 joined the RNVR in 1911. He was mobilised 21/8/1914. He is remembered at the Helles Memorial, Turkey. An original World War 1 medal trio comprising 1914 “Mons” Star (with copy clasp), British War Medal and Victory Medal. The medals are named as follows. Star – 9417 Sjt A. BWM – 9417 Sjt. Victory Medal – Details erased original owners naming lightly visible – M-227 Pte. Alfred John Prout was born in Devonport. He served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers arriving in France on 13 August 1914. Having been involved in the Retreat from Mons, and operations around the Marne, Prout died of wounds on 28 September 1914. During September the Battalion, crossed the Grand Morin at Jouy (8th) then via Sablonnieres to Hondevillers. Crossed the Marne at Nogent (9th) then via Beaurepaire and Bontemps to Le Thiolet. To Sommelans (10th), bivouacs near Bourg (13th). Advanced west of Vendresse towards Chivy (14th) and took up positions along the Chivy-Beauln road. Came under heavy shell fire. Advanced again towards the slopes of the Chemin des Dames Ridge. Held positions north-west of Troyon against attacks (15th). Casualties – Captain Yeatman killed, Lieutenant Johnson mortally wounded, 18 other ranks killed, 1 officer, 76 other ranks wounded, 54 missing. Withdrew (21st) – 2 companies in trenches around the Quarries on the Mont Faucon Ridge, 2 in reserve around Vendresse. Casualties among other ranks now total 35 killed, 131 wounded. Enemy attacked in large numbers (26th) and broke through Battalions line. In his war history of the South Wales Borderers, C. Atkinson records that much hand-to-hand fighting took place – the men picking up any weapon available. One man, he notes, used a table fork. Casualties – Major Welby, Lieutenant G. Blackall-Simonds and Second Lieutenant Sills killed, Lieutenant Coker mortally wounded, 3 officers wounded, 87 other ranks killed, 95 wounded, 12 missing. British Battalions in France & Belgium 1914 by R. Sergeant Prout is buried in the Villeneuve-St. Georges Old Communal Cemetery, Val de Marne, France. The item “Original WW1 Mons Star Medal Trio, Sjt. A genuine, fullsize WW1 1914-15 Star trio to Private Charles H Mann of the 11th Battalion, Warwickshire regiment. He was wounded 15/2/1916 and discharged for wounds 21/10/1916 (Also entitled to silver war badge). Comes with box of issue and envelope for the British war and Victory medal. The medals have correctly impressed naming to 7915 PTE. Charles Mann entered the war in France, 31/7/1915. The 11th Battalion war diary states the battalion was in the area of Berles Au Bois on the day he was wounded.
