Pre-War and WW2 medal group if 7 to the Essex Regiment, comprising India General Service Medal 1908, clasp North West Frontier 1930-31, General Service Medal 1918, clasp Palestine, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal, the first two with correctly impressed naming to. IGSM Medal Roll confirms award of medal and clasp to Pte Reeve with his unit given as 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment and the GSM Roll, with confirmation of clasp, following his transfer to the 1st Battalion of the Essex Regiment. Whilst in Palestine, men of the 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment, were caught up in the aftermath of the Christmas Day bombing of the Jordania Cafe in Haifa for which Pte Mott, 1 Essex, was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal which was subsequently exchanged for a George Cross. Interestingly, their numbers are not miles apart and both have the same Palestine/WW2 combination. During WW2, 1st Essex served in North Africa before the Division was moved to the Far East, participating as a part of the Chindit Force and subsequently Columns working deep into the jungles. I have found reference online to a G. REEVES sic, serving with one of the Chindit Columns, but apart from available rolls and CWGC, no other research done as yet. Medals are in NEF condition with original ribbons although a couple are a little tatty. The Stars are all first issue with small rings. Along with the group is an original, WW2 issue, bi-metal cap badge if the Essex Regiment with slider and blow holes. A nice group, worthy of further research. No reserve and realistic offers will be considered. The item “Pre-War India & Palestine medal group WW2 North Africa & Burma Essex Regiment” is in sale since Monday, October 22, 2018. Great little named grouping from a light mortar crewman. He was from Portland, Maine and his discharge shows he was in Co. However, there is a great booklet from the 357th Infantry Regiment produced in Germany with the lot as well so maybe he was transferred. Pictures show it all. Bronze Star is not named or numbered and looks like it was awarded while he was in the 102nd infantry division. I have not done any research. Combat Infantry badges and expert infantry badge are marked sterling with sterling flat clutchbacks, medals are unnamed and unnumbered. Patches and all items in very good condition including medal case. Dog tags with early C-Clasp chain. Please see pictures for condition and details. Most of my items are vintage and do show signs of use or storage. I try my best to describe the items as honestly and accurately as possible. (Excluding Holidays or prior disclosures). If you have any questions. I will do my best to get back to you the same day. All items I sell come from a smoke free environment. If there are any concerns after you have received your item, please let me know so that I can make it right. Military Medal, George V WW1 for Vimy Ridge to : 14th Bn (Royal Montreal Regiment) Canadian Infantry, with citation. Named to : 124334 A. VF condition with one small edge knock. 9th July, 1917 : “For Gallantry and devotion to duty near THELUS on April 9th, 1917, in assuming command of his Platoon after his seniors had become casualties, His conduct throughout was a spendid example to all ranks”. Award was authorized by General Currie on 16/5/17. Robert Lewis was born in Calgary, Alberta on 26/8/1886, he was a Cook by occupation. He attested at Windsor, Ontario on 3/11/15 giving his address as Indiana, USA. He joined the 70th Battalion but was transferred to the 142nd Battalion in England. Appointed Acting Sergeant the next day, he soon reverted to the ranks to proceed overseas with the 14th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal for the historic attack on Vimy Ridge and later was gassed on 7th November 1917 and evacuated to England. He did not return to France but was promoted to Sergeant. He married Edna Beatrice at some point during the war but on discharge still gave his sister as next of kin and his forwarding address as 11th Machine Gun Bn. Camp Lewis, Washington, USA. Therefore appears to of re-enlisted in the US Army right away. He also received the War Service Badge, Class “A”. With copy of service file. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a military engagement fought primarily as part of the Battle of Arras, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, during the First World War. The main combatants were the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in the First Army, against three divisions of the German 6th Army. The battle, which took place from 9 to 12 April 1917, was part of the opening phase of the Battle of Arras, the first attack of the Nivelle Offensive, intended to attract German reserves from the French front. The objective of the Canadian Corps was to take control of the German-held high ground along an escarpment at the northernmost end of the Arras Offensive. This would ensure that the southern flank could advance without suffering German enfilade fire. Supported by a creeping barrage, the Canadian Corps captured most of the ridge during the first day of the attack. The village of ThĂ©lus fell during the second day of the attack, as did the crest of the ridge, once the Canadian Corps overcame a salient against considerable German resistance. The final objective, a fortified knoll located outside the village of Givenchy-en-Gohelle, fell to the Canadian Corps on 12 April. The German forces then retreated to the OppyMĂ©ricourt line.
