British War and Victory Medals, 1939/45 Defence and War Medals, Coronation Medal King George VI, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal Royal Air Force GV to Wing Commander Christopher Laurie, Royal Air Force late Private, 14th Battalion London Regiment (London Scottish) born in Edinburgh in 1899. Applying for Pilot, Royal Flying Corps, he was appointed Flying Cadet 15th November 1917 and joined Farnborough 20th November 1917. On 29th January 1918 he was transferred to the Gordon Highlanders for posting to 1st Battalion 14th London Regiment (London Scottish) and served in France with this Battalion as a Private soldier. Post Armistice he attested for the Royal Air Force and served in the Equipment Branch. Commissioned Pilot Officer from Warrant Officer 29th February 1940, promoted War Service Flight Lieutenant 1st December 1942 and Acting Squadron Leader, later promoted Wing Commander, he retired retaining the rank of Wing Commander 10th December 1945. He died in Kensington, London in 1979. British War and Victory Medals named. S-20662 Pte C Laurie 14-Lond R. 1939/45 Defence and War Medals. Coronation Medal King George VI 1937. Christopher Laurie was born at 26 Dublin Street, Edinburgh 3rd June 1899, applying for Pilot, Royal Flying Corps, he was appointed Flying Cadet 15th November 1917 having been fit for Pilot training and joined Farnborough 20th November 1917. Post Armistice he attested for the Royal Air Force (342198) and served in the Equipment Branch, he was awarded the King George VI Coronation Medal 1937 whilst serving as a Flight Sergeant, RAF Middle East. The 1939 Register records he is a Warrant Officer RAF residing with his wife Elsie (married at Winchester in 1922) at 17 The Drove, Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Commissioned Pilot Officer from Warrant Officer 29th February 1940 (London Gazette 7th May 1940 page 2725), promoted War Service Flight Lieutenant 1st December 1942 (London Gazette 12th February 1943 page 753) and Acting Squadron Leader, later promoted Wing Commander, he retired retaining the rank of Wing Commander 10th December 1945 (London Gazette 25th March 1947 page 1385). Military Medal, George V WW1 for Vimy Ridge to : 14th Bn (Royal Montreal Regiment) Canadian Infantry, with citation. Named to : 124334 A. VF condition with one small edge knock. 9th July, 1917 : “For Gallantry and devotion to duty near THELUS on April 9th, 1917, in assuming command of his Platoon after his seniors had become casualties, His conduct throughout was a spendid example to all ranks”. Award was authorized by General Currie on 16/5/17. Robert Lewis was born in Calgary, Alberta on 26/8/1886, he was a Cook by occupation. He attested at Windsor, Ontario on 3/11/15 giving his address as Indiana, USA. He joined the 70th Battalion but was transferred to the 142nd Battalion in England. Appointed Acting Sergeant the next day, he soon reverted to the ranks to proceed overseas with the 14th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal for the historic attack on Vimy Ridge and later was gassed on 7th November 1917 and evacuated to England. He did not return to France but was promoted to Sergeant. He married Edna Beatrice at some point during the war but on discharge still gave his sister as next of kin and his forwarding address as 11th Machine Gun Bn. Camp Lewis, Washington, USA. Therefore appears to of re-enlisted in the US Army right away. He also received the War Service Badge, Class “A”. With copy of service file. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a military engagement fought primarily as part of the Battle of Arras, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, during the First World War. The main combatants were the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in the First Army, against three divisions of the German 6th Army. The battle, which took place from 9 to 12 April 1917, was part of the opening phase of the Battle of Arras, the first attack of the Nivelle Offensive, intended to attract German reserves from the French front. The objective of the Canadian Corps was to take control of the German-held high ground along an escarpment at the northernmost end of the Arras Offensive. This would ensure that the southern flank could advance without suffering German enfilade fire. Supported by a creeping barrage, the Canadian Corps captured most of the ridge during the first day of the attack. The village of ThĂ©lus fell during the second day of the attack, as did the crest of the ridge, once the Canadian Corps overcame a salient against considerable German resistance. The final objective, a fortified knoll located outside the village of Givenchy-en-Gohelle, fell to the Canadian Corps on 12 April. The German forces then retreated to the OppyMĂ©ricourt line. Swing mounted WW1 medal trio group to. George Thomas Cubitt, who served with the Royal Naval Reserve from 1902 til the end of the First World War. 1915 Star named in impressed capitals: 63250 PTE. British War Medal and Victory Medal named in impressed capitals. Medals mounted onto a JR Gaunt of Montreal Medal bar. George Thomas Cubitt was born at Dillham, Norfolk, and emigrated to Canada before the war and worked in lumber camps in Northern Saskatchewan. He enlisted at Calgary on 3 November 1914. He served in France with the 14th Canadian Infantry from 23 February 1915 and was wounded by a shell in the trenches on 13 June 1916. The 191415 Star was approved in 1918, for issue to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served in any theatre of the War between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915 (other than those who had already qualified for the 1914 Star). The British war Medal was approved in 1919, for issue to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who had rendered service between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Officers and men of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Dominion and Colonial naval forces (including reserves) were required to have completed 28 days mobilised service the medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period. The medal was later extended to cover the period 191920 and service in mine-clearing at sea as well as participation in operations in North and South Russia, the eastern Baltic, Siberia, the Black Sea, and the Caspian. The Victory Medal (also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal) is a campaign medal – of which the basic design and ribbon was adopted by Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Siam, Union of South Africa and the USA in accordance with decisions as taken at the Inter-Allied Peace Conference at Versailles as illustrated (a’Winged Victory) but in a particular form of this historic Greek monument as determined by each nation, with the exception of the nations in the Far East who issued the medal but with a different design. The dates of the war were in every case 1914 to 1918, except that of the British Empire, which gave the dates as illustrated (1914 to 1919 with 1921 being the year in which the war ended in point of Parliamentary law but in 1919 under common law relating to the status and functions of the monarchy).
