Matron W Amos QAINSR (Royal Red Cross). Great WW1 Nurse medal group and royal red cross , comes with some paper work confirming RRC and MID. Matron Winifred Amos RRC who served in France , No 10 general hospital BEF France and was awarded the Royal Red Cross 2nd class and MID’Mentioned in Despatch. With an Australian connection as in both of her brothers lived in Australia and both served with the AIF in the 43rd Battalion in France. WW1 WW2 Period MBE Nursing medal Group Principle Matron Mildred Florence Hughes Scarce ladies MBE WW2 British War medal group, Mildred Florence Hughes served as a probationary nurse at Evelina Hospital for children during WW1, Southwark, London (from 1911 census) & Guys Hospital London. Serving on home front WW1, fighting “Spanish Flu” pandemic. Awarded The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, M. (Civil) Members 2nd type badge, silver; Jubilee 1935, Coronation 1937, unnamed as issued; Voluntary Medical Services Medal, with two Additional Geneva Cross Award Bars official impressed name Miss Mildred F. Hughes mounted as worn; together with British Red Cross Society State Registered Nurse Badge, gilt and enamel, IMO extremely fine, see pictures for condition Evelina Hospital for Children Born abt 1890 Torrington, Devon, parents Fred Charles Hughes (a Baptist Minister census 1891) and Henrietta Florence Hughes (Terrell). She trained at the Evelian Hospital for Children (1911 census, Hospital nurse Probationer), & WW1 1914-17 Guys Hospital, London, where she subsequently held several residential posts. She would have been a young nurse during WW1 engaged in home front service and probably helped fight the “Spanish Flu” pandemic that raged during 1918-20. She was later in 1917 at the Infants’ Hospital, Vincent Square, Westminster, London becoming Matron in 1928. She joined the Territorial Army Nursing Service in 1929 and served during WW2 as Principle Matron 5th Northern General Hospital (Leicester). She is Certified as a midwife and holds the Diploma in Nursing of London University. She was President of the Leicester Royal Infirmary Nurses League and President, Royal College of Nursing 1944-46 (Copy extract from British Journal of nursing July 1945 with her picture supplied). Awarded MBE post war for her service to nursing, she died in Leicester in 1972, aged 82. With the 80th anniversary of the sinking coming up soon, this is a chance to own the Historically Important medal group awarded to The Captain of the Blue Star Line SS Arandora Star which was sunk by German U-boat U-47 Captained by Ace Gunther Prien. The medals are as follows :- Posthumous Lloyd’s Medal For Bravery at Sea named CAPTAIN. SS ARANDORA STAR 2nd JULY 1940. He was also awarded the Kings Commendation for Brave Conduct at the same time {This is absent}. WW1 Officer Pair named LIEUT. M {Lieutenant Royal Indian Marines} and Mercantile Marine named EDGAR. A Poland Polish Cross of Valour {awarded to him for Officers for the Withdrawal of Polish Troops from France 1940}, Atlantic Star, 1939-45 Star and a War Medal. SELFE on the Pair. Her medal card states PRISCILLA JANE MOULTON nee SELFE. The SS ARANDORA STAR was carrying 1673 people including Crew, British Military Guards German and Italian Prisoners of War and civilian Internees. She was sunk 02/07/1940 with a loss of 826 including Captain Edgar Moulton. He was Posthumously awarded the Lloyds War Medal For Bravery at sea and a German Merchant Navy Prisoner was also Posthumously cited for Heroism. A truly rare medal group and the first time on the market. The only similar medal group i found was this one, but i would say the Arandora Star is rarer. A fine posthumous Kings Commendation, Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea group of seven awarded to Purser R. Clan MacArthur, in August 1943. 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Africa Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45. Lloyds War Medal for Bravery at Sea. Clan MacArthur, 12th August 1943. Kings Commendation for Brave Conduct. Oval plastic badge, on a blue riband. The Lloyds award with some edge bruising, otherwise good very fine and better (7).
