Cuthbert Forrestier Lucas born Teignmouth, Devon, 1879. He is promoted prior to Captain WW1, served with British Expeditionary force from August 1914 earning 1914 Star, promoted to Major about October 1915 and served until retirement in February 1921 aged about 42. He was living in Bulls Barn, Ditching Common, Chailey, Sussex when he died in 1962 aged about 82. Serving on home front WW1, fighting “Spanish Flu” pandemic. Awarded The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, M. (Civil) Members 2nd type badge, silver; Jubilee 1935, Coronation 1937, unnamed as issued; Voluntary Medical Services Medal, with two Additional Geneva Cross Award Bars official impressed name Miss Mildred F. Hughes mounted as worn; together with British Red Cross Society State Registered Nurse Badge, gilt and enamel, IMO extremely fine, see pictures for condition Evelina Hospital for Children Born abt 1890 Torrington, Devon, parents Fred Charles Hughes (a Baptist Minister census 1891) and Henrietta Florence Hughes (Terrell). She trained at the Evelian Hospital for Children (1911 census, Hospital nurse Probationer), & WW1 1914-17 Guys Hospital, London, where she subsequently held several residential posts. She would have been a young nurse during WW1 engaged in home front service and probably helped fight the “Spanish Flu” pandemic that raged during 1918-20. She was later in 1917 at the Infants’ Hospital, Vincent Square, Westminster, London becoming Matron in 1928. She joined the Territorial Army Nursing Service in 1929 and served during WW2 as Principle Matron 5th Northern General Hospital (Leicester). She is Certified as a midwife and holds the Diploma in Nursing of London University. She was President of the Leicester Royal Infirmary Nurses League and President, Royal College of Nursing 1944-46 (Copy extract from British Journal of nursing July 1945 with her picture supplied). Awarded MBE post war for her service to nursing, she died in Leicester in 1972, aged 82. Boer War & WW1 British Army medal group of 4 to C. Johns, who served in both the Royal Navy and Army, was wounded at Ladysmith and served in France from 1914 during the Great War. Impressed named 2721 PTE C. JOHNS, DEVON: REGT; with Ghost dates, polished to left edge of face ; 1914 Star, impressed named (Numbers obscured as medal is sewn down) PTE C. YORK:R, with clasp; War and Victory Medals, impressed named 9306 SJT. Comes with original Royal Navy Service papers; discharge certificate – West Riding RHA; 2 x discharge certificates – 5th Royal Garrison Regiment; 2 x Devonshire Regiment; 3 x Labour Corps and copies of medal rolls, medal index cards, enlistment papers. Charles Johns was born in Millbrook, Cornwall on the 24/3/1870. After that his date of birth changed each time he enlisted. He enlisted in the Royal Navy on the 14/9/1888. Service number 146412 and served on the H. Agincourt, HMS Aurora in 1889. Enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment on the 27/9/1889, with his date of birth as July 1871. He states his previous service as being with the 4th Devon Regiment and as having previously been rejected from enlistment as Under chest development. He served: 1st Battalion Home 25/9/89-27/1/91. Passed a course Mounted Infantry 1892. Recalled to Army Service 7/10/1899. 2nd Battalion South Africa 20/10/99-19/4/01. Johns C 2721 Private 2nd Bn. Source: Natal Field Force Casualty Roll, page 61, line 6 Devonshire Regiment. QSA Medal roll remarks invalided 27/03/1901. On returning to England, he enlisted in the 5th Royal Garrison Regiment. Transferred to the Royal Berkshire Regiment 3/11/05 in Halifax (Canada). Enlisted in the West Riding Royal Horse Artillery as a Gunner14/10/08 Regimental number 161. He served until October 1912. On the 28/8/1914 he enlisted in the Special Reserve with a Regimental number of 3/9306 posted to the 3rd Battalion West Yorkshire Regt. Posted to the 20th Notts and Derby Regiment. 14/5/17 28th Coy Labour Corps. Discharged 14/5/18 No longer physically fit for war service. Re enlisted labour Corps 29/5/19. Group of Four medal to Father and Son from Teignmouth, Devon. Services in the Royal Navy, Royal Warwickshire Regiment and the Royal Irish Rifles. Egypt Medal Pair and Khedive’s Star to G. Egypt Medal is correctly named with NO pitting from the star, actually in very good condition. Very little wear to both medals/. George Henry Crimp was born in Lidstone, Devon 7th September 1851. He joined the Royal Navy on 7th September 1869, serving until 1888. Comes with copy of Service Paper sheets and Egypt medal roll. British War and Victory Medals. WW1 Medal pair to : 202065. Later served with the 15th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles Service no. Comes with Copies Medal Index Card, & Medal Roll from the R. Medal are swing mounted for wear, in very good condition. Paper work to also include 1901 and 1911 Census. So quite a lot of paper work in all to come with these medals.
