WW1 Royal Australian Navy medal group to Able Seaman R. Currie, whose wartime service included ships H. Post war served in the Black Sea supporting the White Russian Forces. 1914 15 Star, impressed named O. British War Medal impressed named 2714 R. Victory medal, impressed named 2714 ROBERT CURRIE. Swing mounted for display. Comes with copy service papers. Robert Currie was born in Melbourne on the 7/11/1894. A small man (54 tall), he joined the Royal Australian Navy on the 26/2/1913 and was given the service number 2714. At the outbreak of the war, he was serving on H. Melbourne on which he served from the 23/4/1913 1/2/1916. The Melbourne landed a naval party on Nauru Island to carry out the destruction of the wireless station 9/9/1914. Posted to the London Depot 2/2/16 23/6/16 then to H. He served the remainder of the war on H. Between December 1918 and January 1919, the Brisbane sailed through the Dardanelles to the Sea of Marmara, and into the Black Sea as part of British force that operated off Sebastopol and Smyrna (a show of force to support White Russian forces engaged in fighting the Bolsheviks). 8/9/1919 posted to H. 15/1/1920 posted to H. Period swing mounted; miniature 1914 15 medal trio, swing mounted; brass Princess Mary Tin with original Christmas card and original period print Princess Mary and corresponding envelope; original Admiralty medal award document dated 30/11/1923. Comes with copys service records, medal roll, Commonwealth War Graves certificates and newspaper articles. Chief Petty Officer Joseph Palmer was born on the 2. June 1878 at Barking, Essex. He enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2. Class on the 12/8/1893 and progressed through the ranks to Petty Officer 1. Class by October 1903. HMS Hindustan (London-class pre-dreadnought battleship) 15/5/1912 7/9/1915. She arrived at Malta on 27 November 1912 and subsequently participated in a blockade by an international force of Montenegro and in an occupation of Scutari. Arabis-class minesweeping sloop launched on 26 February 1916 and sunk by the German submarine U-57, 23 October 1916. Of the 85 Officers and men, only 12 survived. Superb Royal Navy group to an officer, completely unresearched. Lieutenant C W M Bragg varied selection including his commission as a Sub Lieutenant dated Aug 1941. Large book Gunnery Notes. Good selection of various photographs of him and various ships. Certificates, documents and service record also included. Everything you see is included, nothing more, nothing less. Some items have suffered a bit of water damage as pictured but mostly ok condition. Please note due to people copying photographs I will no longer be supplying close ups of individual photographs. A Mercantile Marine and Royal Navy medal group to Addison George Purkis. Addison was born on 19th January 1919 in Toxteth Park in Liverpool, Lancashire. He served in the Merchant Navy from 1912 as a stewards boy then as a ships steward. He was a lucky survivor of the sinking of the troopship SS Transylvania which was torpedoed on 3rd May 1917 with the loss of 412 lives. SS Transylvania was carrying 3,120 soldiers, passengers and crew and she torpedoed near Savona in Italy by German U-Boat U-63, commanded by Otto Schutze. Otto sank 53 merchant ships during the war and who was awarded the Pour Le Merite. Addison then went onto enlist into the Royal Navy on 14th June 1917 serving on HMS Victory VI, HMS Kildonan Castle and at the submarine base HMS Dolphin before being demobilised in March 1919. The War and Victory Medals are correctly named as follows. The Merchantile Marine War Medal is correctly named as follows. The group also includes copies of his service papers, a copy of a photo of Addison, medal index cards, details of the ships and bases he served at, copy of a letter written by a survivor of SS Transylvania, newspaper articles regarding the ships loss, copies of tickets and other details.
