It doesn’t get rarer than this… Completely original Type 1 1939 U. Marine Corps Fleet Reserve miniature medal. These type 1 medals were only awarded (I believe there was a single BB&B contract) for a handful of months in early 1939. It was replaced by the type II medal for the second half of 1939 and a short time in 1940 before a complete activation of the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve occurred at the earliest onset of WWII. Thus, there was no need for either medal during the war, so both early types rarely surface for sale. Full size type I medals only come up for sale every few years, and I’ve only seen two miniatures in 30 years in the hobby. This is truly a time capsule piece. The Merchant Navy Medal was awarded to those who served in the Irish Merchant Navy during the Emergency period. The front of the medal disc is the same design as all the other Emergency medals but the back had a different design. The medal was awarded to Merchant Navy personnel only.
