Irish Merchant Marine medal extremely rare 1939 1946

The Merchant Navy Medal was awarded to those who served in the Irish Merchant Navy during the Emergency period. The front of the medal disc is the same design as all the other Emergency medals but the back had a different design. The medal was awarded to Merchant Navy personnel only. Numbers of medals issued were. Medals without bar 299. With one Bar 122. With two Bars 34. With three Bars 58. The medal also differs from other Emergency medals as it was issued with a blue and white ribbon and it could also be awarded with three 1939 – 46 service bars where as the other emergency medals could only be awarded with a maximum of two bars. The qualifying period for receipt of the medal was 3rd September 1939 to the 31st March 1946 with a minimum of 6 months served. Please judge the condition by the photos. Any questions please ask. Offered is a WW1 & WW2 medal group to. Captain Essex James Marden, who served during the First & Second World Wars, the latter more importantly at Dunkirk and most likely D-Day. British War and Mercan. Tile Marine pair both impressed named ESSEX J MARDON; 1939 45 Star and British Defence Medal 1939 45, these last 2 both un named as issued. Period swing mounted for wear. Comes with copies seamans identity card (with photograph) WW1 & WW2 medal roll/card, 1939 census and newspaper articles. Captain Essex James Marden was born on the 14. December 1889 at Plymouth, he was a sailor by trade and by 1909 gained his 2. Mates certificate and in 1911 his 1. His WW1 service qualified him for the British War and Mercantile Marine Medal. Between the wars he qualified as a Pilot and was working for Trinity House. Newspaper articles from 1937 give his rank as Captain and a Trinity Pilot, and in 1947 he rescued a drifting US seaplane in Torbay. During the Second World War, Trinity House kept sea lanes marked and lighted for Allied convoys. The Pilotage Service guided ships to their ports under hazardous conditions; at the time of the Dunkirk evacuation, a number of pilots helped in piloting vessels to and from the beaches. In preparation for the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944, Trinity House laid 73 lighted buoys and two lightvessels to indicate a safe route for landing craft. Trinity House pilots were responsible for all commercial vessels involved and many of the service vessels. Captain Marden died on the 27 July 1972 in Hammersmith Hospital, London. Case shows normal light use from display storage but color is good as is in the interior. The medal is a early proper production with frosted wrap brooch and short stiff ribbon. WW1 CPR Merchant Marine Medals & Certificate Of Gratitude, Papers and Portrait of the Fleet. CPR mustered 52 ships into transporting men and materiel (one million troops and war-time passengers; 4 million tonnes of cargo) 12 ships were torpedoed. 11,340 CPR employees enlisted in all branches of the Canadian Armed Forces and 1, 116 were killed. Included in this collection are: Oak framed Certificate of Gratitude awarded to Seaman McFarlane with his 1914- 1918 Service Medal: William B McFarlane Merchant Marine Medal: William B McFarlane. This framed certificate is UNGLASSED. The company’s official history proudly point out that of it’s personnel service, Two of it’s combatants were awarded the Victoria Cross; Dimensions: OAK FRAME 15″ X 18 & 1/2″. Titled “Canada’s Rally to the Empire- Answering the Call of the Motherland”, it chronicles the mustering and departure of the CEF in October of 1914, a feat, it extols as being unparalleled since William the Conqueror. ” Measures approximately 9″ by 41 inches.
