Circular gilt bronze medal with integral bar for ribbon suspension; the face with a map of France centrally from which radiate six sets of rays imposed on a vertical chain with rectangular links, circumscribed’REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’ above; the reverse with the same vertical chain, now broken, dated’1940′ in small numerals and’1945′ in large numerals centrally, circumscribed’MEDAILLE DE LA DEPORTATION ET DE L’INTERNEMENT. , with Paris Mint cornucopia bronze assay mark and signed’MAB’ (for Arthus Bertrand of Paris); on original ribbon for Internees (that for Deportees having vertical stripes) with gilt bronze’INTERNE’ bar. The Medal was instituted on 9 September 1948 to recognise those deported or interned for political reasons during World War II and could only be awarded to those in possession of a Deportees or Political Internees card.
