The British Forces eventually restored calm, however, in 1919 the Waziris took advantage of unrest in Afghanistan following the Third Anglo-Afghan War to launch more raids against British garrisons. It has been asserted that one of the reasons for these raids was that a rumour had been spread amongst the Wazirs and the Mahsuds, that Britain was going to give control of Waziristan to Afghanistan as part of the peace settlement following the Third Anglo-Afghan War. Buoyed by this prospect and sensing British weakness, the tribes were encouraged to launch a series of large scale raids in the administered areas. By November 1919, they had killed over 200 people and wounded a further 200. Minor raids by the Wazirs and forays by British forces continued into 1921, however, following the 19191920 campaign, the British decided upon a change of strategy in Waziristan. It was determined that a permanent garrison of regular troops would be maintained in the region to work much more closely with the militia units that were being reconstituted following the troubles that occurred during the 1919 war with Afghanistan. As part of this policy, it was decided that a garrison would be maintained at Razmak. An aerial strafing and bombardment campaign dubbed. Pink’s War was carried out by the Royal Air Force in 1925 (Germans copied this tactic in WW2, better known as “Blitzkrieg”). Conflict flared up again in Waziristan in 1936, resulting in another campaign that lasted until 1939. WW2 Royal Artillery North Africa. It included campaigns fought in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts (Western Desert Campaign, also known as the Desert War) and in Morocco and Algeria (Operation Torch) and Tunisia (Tunisia Campaign). 2nd battle of El Alamein late 1942 was the major turning point for the allies in WW2, resulting in driving German and italian troops out of North Africa and was the prelude to the Allied Invasion of Italy, later France. Pre-War and WW2 medal group if 7 to the Essex Regiment, comprising India General Service Medal 1908, clasp North West Frontier 1930-31, General Service Medal 1918, clasp Palestine, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal, the first two with correctly impressed naming to. IGSM Medal Roll confirms award of medal and clasp to Pte Reeve with his unit given as 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment and the GSM Roll, with confirmation of clasp, following his transfer to the 1st Battalion of the Essex Regiment. Whilst in Palestine, men of the 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment, were caught up in the aftermath of the Christmas Day bombing of the Jordania Cafe in Haifa for which Pte Mott, 1 Essex, was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal which was subsequently exchanged for a George Cross. Interestingly, their numbers are not miles apart and both have the same Palestine/WW2 combination. During WW2, 1st Essex served in North Africa before the Division was moved to the Far East, participating as a part of the Chindit Force and subsequently Columns working deep into the jungles. I have found reference online to a G. REEVES sic, serving with one of the Chindit Columns, but apart from available rolls and CWGC, no other research done as yet. Medals are in NEF condition with original ribbons although a couple are a little tatty. The Stars are all first issue with small rings. Along with the group is an original, WW2 issue, bi-metal cap badge if the Essex Regiment with slider and blow holes. A nice group, worthy of further research. No reserve and realistic offers will be considered. The item “Pre-War India & Palestine medal group WW2 North Africa & Burma Essex Regiment” is in sale since Monday, October 22, 2018.
