The item in the image is an Iron Cross, specifically the 2nd Class version from 1914. It was a German military decoration. The cross was awarded for acts of bravery in battle. The “W” in the center stands for Kaiser Wilhelm II, who reinstated the award in 1914. It became a symbol of military prowess and courage. The black and white ribbon is typical for the 2nd Class Iron Cross. The Iron Cross design has been adopted by various groups, including some non-military ones.
Imperial German World War I 1914 Presentation 1st Class Iron Cross Decoration. Measures 1 3/4″ wide by 1 3/4″ tall. The front of the four-armed Maltese cross shows a King’s crown on the upper arm with a’W’ in the center. The lower arm is dated’1914′. The reverse side is hand engraved that reads’Hauptm. Has a wide vertical pin back with a’c’ catch. There is a maker’s mark at the base that reads’KO’. Three-piece die struck nickel construction with a magnetic center. Original WWI Imperial German Iron Coin Precious Metals War Collection Gold. Nice original Bavarian Medal. The “Jubiläumsmedaille für die Armee 1905″ was instituted on March 12th, 1905, due to the 70 year military anniversary of Prince Regent Leopold. The decoration was awarded to all officers, medical officers, Petty Officers and Ensigns in active service. The awarding was enlarged to lower ranks and civil personnel on June 20th, 1905. Still living recipients of the gold and silver “Militärverdienst-Medaille” were also awarded the medal. A total of 22.033 medals were produced by the “Münchener Hauptmünze”. The oval and bronze medal has image on the front and writing on the reverse. The front shows a left facing image of the Prince Regent with a small oak leave cluster below. Along the edge the text “LUITPOLD – PRINZ – REGENT – VON – BAYERN” can be found. ARMEE – GEWIDMET – XII. The ribbon is red with left and right a 3mm wide green edge.
