A farm in the Orange Free State (Reddersburg district; Free State), six km east of Reddersburg. Three companies of the 2nd The Royal Irish Rifles (424 men) and two companies of mounted infantry 167 men, Capt W. Dimsdale, Royal Irish Rifles left Dewetsdorp on 2 April 1900 for Reddersburg under Capt W. McWhinnie, Royal Irish Rifles. In heavy rain the column made slow progress, the horses were not fit and needed resting. The column halted at 5:45 p. Early the next morning the column started out, at about 10 a. The advance scouts reached a ridge on the farm Mostert’s Hoek (Mostertshoek) and came under fire. McWhinnie occupied three kopjes, a front of 3/4 mile which was too long for his force. De Wet called on McWhinnie to surrender because he was seriously outnumbered; this was turned down. Four guns were brought into action to shell the British troops. Surrounded and without water the British positions were rushed on the morning of 4 April, the Boers had crept to within 30 yards of the Mounted Infantry. As McWhinnie consulted with his officers one infantry Company on a kopje waved white handkerchiefs and two men near McWhinnie also waved white handkerchiefs. McWhinnie was compelled to surrender; losses were ten killed, 35 wounded and 540 taken prisoner. Hall was released from the Waterval Camp on June 6 1900. Of the actual medals and Clasp in question and not stock photo. George Hall from Bristol joined 1 Grenadier Guards in 1907 and signed for seven years. He was rapidly promoted to Lance Corporal but received a penalty shortly after – the removal of L/Cpl stripes for being in a dirty state (unspecified). Curious that he subsequently remained a private in Grenadier Guards throughout the initial seven years and then throughout WWI, for which he extended his service. Older style online MIC confirms title and award of 1914 Star to 13131 Pte A Hall of 1 Grenadier Guards and records date of entry to theatre of war as being 6 October 1914 (confirming title to Clasp). Another online MIC, updated version, confirms title and award of BWM and AVM to 13131 Guardsman George Hall of Grenadier Guards , date of entry to theatre of war again given as 6 October 1914. 1914 Star impressed to Pte A Hall etc, Pair impressed to Pte G Hall etc. There are no other MICs online showing any Star awarded to any 13131 Pte G Hall, nor any showing any Pair awarded to any 13131 Pte A Hall. 13131 Pte A Hall and 13131 Pte George Hall are one and the same. The only explanation is that Guardsman 13131 George Hall kept his 1914 Star and Clasp incorrectly impressed with the wrong initial. Please see others listed. No other details or papers held.
