A labourer by trade he was serving with the 3. Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Militia) when he enlisted into the Regular Army, Northumberland Fusiliers on the 19/12/1893. After training at the depot, he was posted to the 1. Battalion 12/4/1894, promoted to Lance Corporal 14/10/95. Posted to the 2. Battalion 15/10/94, busted to Private 2/11/96. Posted back to the 1. Battalion 1/1/1897 promoted to L/Cpl and reverted twice. Discharged to Army Reserve 25/8/02 18/12/05. Married 28/7/1902 at Ladybrand, South Africa. Served Home 19/12/1893 14/10/95. McWhinnie was compelled to surrender; losses were ten killed, 35 wounded and 540 taken prisoner. Hall was released from the Waterval Camp on June 6 1900. When the British troops entered Pretoria on 5 June 1900, 129 officers and 36 other ranks overpowered their guards just prior to the arrival of the troops. On 6 June, 3,187 non-commissioned officers and men were released at Waterval. WW1 Hall latter in the South African Service Corps as a Sergeant and died in Durban 13/7/1942. Check out my other items.
