NORTHD: FUS:; Kings South Africa Medal (1902), with 2 clasps SOUTH AFRICA 1901, SOUTH AFRICA 1902, impressed named 4029 PTE E. NORTHD: FUS: British War Medal & bilingual Victory Medal, impressed named S JT E. Khedives Sudan Medal (1896 1908), with clasp KHARTOUM, period engraved 4024 PTE E. Court mounted for display. Comes with copies of: service records, medal rolls, POW list, marriage certificate and newspaper articles. Sergeant Edward Albert Hall was born in August 1875, at Newcastle, Northumberland. A labourer by trade he was serving with the 3. Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Militia) when he enlisted into the Regular Army, Northumberland Fusiliers on the 19/12/1893. After training at the depot, he was posted to the 1. Battalion 12/4/1894, promoted to Lance Corporal 14/10/95. Posted to the 2. Battalion 15/10/94, busted to Private 2/11/96. Posted back to the 1. Battalion 1/1/1897 promoted to L/Cpl and reverted twice. Discharged to Army Reserve 25/8/02 18/12/05. Married 28/7/1902 at Ladybrand, South Africa. Served Home 19/12/1893 14/10/95. Egypt & Sudan 17/1/98 1/11/98. South Africa 4/11/99 24/08/1902. Taken Prisoner of War: As member of the 18. Company (Northumberland Fusiliers) Mounted Infantry, Hall was captured at Mostert’s Hoek on 4 April 1900, Gazetteer refers. A farm in the Orange Free State (Reddersburg district; Free State), six km east of Reddersburg. Three companies of the 2nd The Royal Irish Rifles (424 men) and two companies of mounted infantry 167 men, Capt W. Dimsdale, Royal Irish Rifles left Dewetsdorp on 2 April 1900 for Reddersburg under Capt W. McWhinnie, Royal Irish Rifles. In heavy rain the column made slow progress, the horses were not fit and needed resting. The column halted at 5:45 p. Early the next morning the column started out, at about 10 a. The advance scouts reached a ridge on the farm Mostert’s Hoek (Mostertshoek) and came under fire. McWhinnie occupied three kopjes, a front of 3/4 mile which was too long for his force. De Wet called on McWhinnie to surrender because he was seriously outnumbered; this was turned down. Four guns were brought into action to shell the British troops. Surrounded and without water the British positions were rushed on the morning of 4 April, the Boers had crept to within 30 yards of the Mounted Infantry. As McWhinnie consulted with his officers one infantry Company on a kopje waved white handkerchiefs and two men near McWhinnie also waved white handkerchiefs. McWhinnie was compelled to surrender; losses were ten killed, 35 wounded and 540 taken prisoner. Hall was released from the Waterval Camp on June 6 1900. When the British troops entered Pretoria on 5 June 1900, 129 officers and 36 other ranks overpowered their guards just prior to the arrival of the troops. On 6 June, 3,187 non-commissioned officers and men were released at Waterval. WW1 Hall latter in the South African Service Corps as a Sergeant and died in Durban 13/7/1942. Check out my other items. Offered is a multi campaign medal group to Private Alexander Taite, who served with the 1. Battalion Seaforth Highlanders in India, Malta, Crete, Egypt/Sudan and South Africa during his time in the colours. Offered is a Queen’s Sudan Medal (1896-98) engraved named 4398. 2: SES: HIGHRS: King’s South Africa Medal (1901-02), with 2 clasps SOUTH AFRICA 1901, SOUTH AFRICA 1902, impressed named 4398 PTE. SEAFORTH HIGHRS:; Court mounted for display. Comes with copies service records, medal rolls and Regimental History extracts. Alexander Tait was born at Scremerston, Northumberland in February 1871, a coal miner by trade he enlistment in the Seaforth Highlanders at Berwick-upon-Tweed on 12/11/1892. After basic training at the depot, he was posted to the 1. At the time the Battalion was stationed in Ireland but was responsible for sending draughts of trained men to keep up the strength of the 2. Battalion who were stationed in India. Pte Tait was posted to the 2. In 1893, the 2. Battalion had just moved from Rawalpindi to Ferozepore. In March 1895 the Battalion was part of the 3. Brigade which was sent to the relief of the besieged British Garrison at Chitral. In 1897 the 1. Battalion was posted to Malta and the 2. Battalion as the home service battalion sent draughts to make the 1. Battalion up to strength. Pte Tait was sent back to the 1. Battalion 23/1/1897 at Malta. Occupation of Crete 1897. Due to the ongoing tensions on Crete an international force from Britain, France, Russia, Italy and Austria was sent to the island as a peacekeeping force. Pte Tait served there from 22/3/1897 3/8/97 returning to Malta. Egypt & the Sudan. The history of the 1. Battalion Seaforth gives the date of the landing in Cairo, Egypt as March 1898, (Pte Taits records show 5/1/1898) moving by train, Nile river boat, Kitcheners desert railway, sailing boat and camel they moved south to join the Army under Kitchener. He fought at the battle of Atbara River 5/4/1898 and at the battle of Omdurman against the Dervishes. Battalion garrisoned Egypt and sent drafts of men to the 2. Battalion who were fighting in the Boer War. Pte Tait was transferred to the 2. It is probable that he became ill as he was transferred invalid? On leave out of India for 8 months from 24 January 1910. Married at Eastbourne in circa May 1910 to Edith Verschoyle, widow of Kynaston Edwards Verschoyle, C. Of Irrigation, Lower Egypt, b. 9 August 1858; d. 17 March 1907; m. Of Matthew Wilson Armour of Liverpool and had a son Harold Denis Edwards Verschoyle, b. 1900, later Lieut-Col, OBE (Mil), Somerset L. And The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Appointed temporary Company Commander, 4 th P. Rajputs (10 th Jats served in India until 1917) The 1st battalion, 4th P. Rajputs were mobilised 20 January 1915, originally as part of 12 th Indian Infantry Brigade, 12 th Indian Division. They landed at Basra in Mesopotamia on 7 February 1915. The regiment served in Mesopotamia until September 1919. Appointed temporary Major 1 September 1915 Promoted Major 1 Dec 1915 (later antedated to 1 Sept 1915) Appointed Company Commander & second in command, 2nd battalion, 11 th Rajputs, 27 September 1918. (The 2nd battalion, 11th Rajputs was formed in India in January 1918) Still with 2nd battalion, 11th Rajputs in April 1919 Indian Army List. Serves with 2nd battalion, 11th Rajputs during 3 rd Afghan war. They were stationed at Loralai, Baluchistan at outbreak of war. The battalion was disbanded in May 1920. In the July 1919, January 1920, April 1920 & April 1921 Indian Army Lists he is listed as being on leave on a medical certificate. Retired as a consequence of ill-health 10 April 1921. In the First World War he served with the 27th Bn. (Tyneside Irish) Northumberland Fusiliers and his service number was 7! He was wounded (gun shot wound) on the 1st day of the Somme and evacuated to base 02/07/1916. The WW1 medals are correctly named but unfortunately the Sudan and Boer War medals have all been renamed.
