Boxed George VI type 1 TERRITORIAL MEDAL FOR EFFICIENT SERVICE awarded to R. Woods, Royal West Kent Regiment. This medal was awarded for twelve years service in British Territorial or Militia units within the Commonwealth. Engraved on the edge 6143717 PTE. Obverse – Crowned bust of George VI and the legend. Reverse – FOR EFFICIENT SERVICE. Full length including ribbon approximately 13cms, the medal and title bar measures approx. 5.4cms x 3.5cms. Cardboard box with printed paper label – E. Butler served in Sub Group One and aboard the Jeep Carriers USS Corregidor, USS Tripoli, Fighter Squadron 31 in the Korean War and Air Transport Squadron Ten (VR 10) during WWII. His full career requires further research. His ribbons and three loose medals were separated from the main group. Discharge document to George Butler, CS2 dated 27 Aug 56. Discharge document to George Butler, SIC dated 29 Apr 46. He was awarded The Victory Medal, American Area Service Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal. Massy Co of the Tripoli, one dated 26 Oct 55 as part of Fighter Squadron 31, one dated 11 Jun 46 for Fighter Squadron 31. Promotion Document to Commissaryman Third Class dated 16 May 53 while serving aboard the USS Tripoli. US Navy Certification of completion for Correspondence course dated 19 Jan 53 & US Navy Certificate of Completion for NTSch (Cooks & Bakers) dated 12 Feb 44. Two 8 x 10 b/w photos including a deck shot of the USS Corregidor and helicopters flying from CVHA-1, USS Thetis Bay (formerly CVE-90), Anzio class. Carries up to 1000 troops. Sewn Medal Bar for the Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. VR-10 was commissioned at Honolulu in 1943 and was primarily a maintenance squadron. During the Korean War she carried men, aircraft and aviation cargo to NATO countries and Korea. During the Korean War she carried F-84 Thunderjets to Korea. Fighter Squadron 31 “Tomcatters, ” whose patch is based on Felix the Cat flew the F2H Banshee during the 1950′s. Medals, documents, photos show normal wear/tear associated with age. Medals are sewn for wear on dress uniform. Documents show fading, yellowing from wear. May have fold lines, creasing. A Second War O. Group of five medals awarded to Captain J. George, Mercantile Marine, who was awarded the O. For his services when his vessel, the S. Devis, was attacked in 1941, and was subsequently killed in action during a further attack on 21 November 1943. (Civil) Officers 2nd type breast badge, silver-gilt. The WW2 campaign awards all later engraved’Capt. With named Ministry of Transport condolence slip. London Gazette 17 March 1942: Captain John Henry George, Master. He showed high qualities of determination and seamanship. John Henry George born in Fishguard, Cardiganshire, in 1882, and first went to sea in September 1900. During the Second World War he was Master of the M. He was awarded the O. For his services when his vessel was attacked by hostile aircraft on 2 April 1941, whilst transporting stores and troops, both British and Australian. Captain George subsequently received personal congratulations from the Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean, Admiral A. Devis eventually reached Alexandria and sailed to India for repairs. In November 1943, Captain George was again Master of S. Devis, sailing in convoy to his home port of Liverpool, in November 1943. Ominously, he writes in the last entry of his journal on 17 November:’For three days now there has been a Jerry reconnaissance plane around having a look at us. Today he had a damn good look too. We could see him circling round the convoy taking tab of all. We haven’t seen a plane of ours for three days. Can’t understand where they are. They must know that we are being shadowed and one would think there would be some round now. There was a Sub in the vicinity too but luckily (touch wood) there has been no attack yet but I would not be a bit surprised if we don’t get an attack in one form or another later. The attack came four days later, on 21 November, when 25 long range He-177 bombers set out to attack the convoy. Twenty reached the target, three being shot down and another two driven off, but not before they had released 40 Hs-293 glider bombs, sinking the freighter Marsa and damaging the S. Devis, amongst whose casualties was Captain George, killed. He was subsequently buried at sea and is recorded by name in the Merchant Navy Roll of Honour.
