A Second War O. Group of five medals awarded to Captain J. George, Mercantile Marine, who was awarded the O. For his services when his vessel, the S. Devis, was attacked in 1941, and was subsequently killed in action during a further attack on 21 November 1943. (Civil) Officers 2nd type breast badge, silver-gilt. The WW2 campaign awards all later engraved’Capt. With named Ministry of Transport condolence slip. London Gazette 17 March 1942: Captain John Henry George, Master. He showed high qualities of determination and seamanship. John Henry George born in Fishguard, Cardiganshire, in 1882, and first went to sea in September 1900. During the Second World War he was Master of the M. He was awarded the O. For his services when his vessel was attacked by hostile aircraft on 2 April 1941, whilst transporting stores and troops, both British and Australian. Captain George subsequently received personal congratulations from the Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean, Admiral A. Devis eventually reached Alexandria and sailed to India for repairs. In November 1943, Captain George was again Master of S. Devis, sailing in convoy to his home port of Liverpool, in November 1943. Ominously, he writes in the last entry of his journal on 17 November:’For three days now there has been a Jerry reconnaissance plane around having a look at us. Today he had a damn good look too. We could see him circling round the convoy taking tab of all. We haven’t seen a plane of ours for three days. Can’t understand where they are. They must know that we are being shadowed and one would think there would be some round now. There was a Sub in the vicinity too but luckily (touch wood) there has been no attack yet but I would not be a bit surprised if we don’t get an attack in one form or another later. The attack came four days later, on 21 November, when 25 long range He-177 bombers set out to attack the convoy. Twenty reached the target, three being shot down and another two driven off, but not before they had released 40 Hs-293 glider bombs, sinking the freighter Marsa and damaging the S. Devis, amongst whose casualties was Captain George, killed. He was subsequently buried at sea and is recorded by name in the Merchant Navy Roll of Honour. A fantastic group of original items, formerly the property of US Marine Corps Captain Thomas Howard Bruce, for service during WW II, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War, starting as an enlisted man and then rising to captain. Ensemble consists of the following items. Bruce’s framed original medal group, consisting of a legion of Merit with V and Navy Commendation Medal with V, among 14 framed medals (all unnamed as issued). A named, engraved officers Mameluke sword. Numerous photos, clippings, and memorabilia. A large collection of official paperwork and documents, including citations for valor awards, promotion documents, large and small photos, orders, and a bonanza of other miscellaneous paperwork and correspondence. Bruce received his Commendation Ribbon (later the medal when issued) with a V for valor for manning a heavy machine gun on the light cruiser U. Louis during kamikaze attacks of Leyte and Okinawa. His V for valor on the Legion of Merit medal was for service in Vietnams An Hua Province, where he established a supply base and rendered aid to wounded Marines while under rocket and mortar attack. The Marine Corps officers’ sword, overall length 36.75, is a high quality example with a German made blade marked Conqueror, featuring beautiful etched engraved panels with Capt. Bruces name in a polished metal scabbard with gilt fittings. All are in excellent condition. A very desirable Marine Corps group covering the major conflicts of the mid-twentieth century. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions or for additional photos. The item “WW II, Korean & Vietnam War, Capt. T. H. This is a good condition WW1 US AEF USAS Named Pilot Grouping Wings Medals Badges Capt JN Thorp Jr NJ. The state medal for New Jersey is named to Capt NJ Thorp Jr. The ribbon is fragile and is tearing because of it being silk. The victory medal is named to him on the rim as Capt JN Thorp Jr Aviator USA. I do not know if this is common to have US Victory medals named on the rim or not as it is the first I have seen. The collars are not exactly matching with one being two piece and the other being one piece both without maker marks. The eagle and one star pennant is also not maker marked but has excellent enamel on it and shows well. The Paterson New Jersey town medal is also named to Capt JN Thorp Jr on the back of it. The wing are outstanding and come complete with a pin on the back. The gold overlay for the US is nicely toned as are the siler wings and shield. They are 3 1/2 inches across. Capt JN Thorp is on the internet and is easily researchable. Also included is a US Aviation 1 star pennant approx 11x 6.5 inches. Originally this was all in a frame but I had to remove it from the frame to make sure that everything was original. The item “WW1 US AEF USAS Named Pilot Grouping Wings Medals Badges Capt JN Thorp Jr NJ” is in sale since Monday, May 13, 2019.
