Having invaded Manchuria in 1931 and established a puppet regime, the occupying Japanese Imperial Kwantung (or Guandong) Army built a shrine known as the National Foundation Sacred Shrine in the national palace in Hsinking to symbolise Japanese imperial power and’Japanese-Manchurian friendship’.
