MEDAGLIA COMMEMORATIVA DI FIUME Primo Tipo WW1 ITALY Commemorative Medal

V ERY SCARCE ITALIAN OCCUPATION OF FIUME MEDAL. Circular bronze medal with integral bar for ribbon suspension; the face with a Roman eagle standard above raised arms holding daggers, inscribed HIC MANEBIMUS OPTIME (Latin = Here we will very well stay); the reverse inscribed AL LIBERATORI XII SETTEMBRE MCMXIX (To the Liberators 12 September 1919) above a wreath of laurel, a scroll below inscribed FIUME DITALIA (Italian Fiume); with ORIGINAL VINTAGE RIBBON. The medal was instituted on 12 September 1919 by Gabriele dAnnunzio, leader of the unofficial expedition to seize control of the port of Fiume. It was awarded to the 2,500 volunteers who participated in the expedition and to its notable supporters, such as the scientist and engineer Guglielmo Marconi. On 31 January 1926 by Royal Decree No 273 members of the Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (National Security Volunteer Militia) were given the right to wear the medal and by Royal Decree No. 1179 of 5 July 1938 this was extended to all members of the Italian Armed Forces. The medal was designed by A de Carolis and manufactured by S. Johnson but was not signed or marked. The phrase Hic manebimus optime was reportedly the response of Marcus Furius Camillus, ca. 446-365 BC to the Roman senators who were on the point of abandoning Rome in the face of invasion by the Gauls in 390BC. The Treaty of Saint Germain between Austria and the victorious Allies at the end of World War I granted the port of Fiume on the Adriatic opposite Trieste to the new state of Yugoslavia (then known as the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes), despite its majority Italian population and having been promised to Italy during the war. Almost immediately, the Italian poet Gabriele dAnnunzio organized a force of volunteers and seized the city for Italy to tremendous popular acclaim. It was only on 24 December 1920 that the Italian government responded, shelling dAnnunzios headquarters and forcing his departure. The tactics and impact of a small group of volunteers prepared to use violence was not lost on an ambitious young politician named Benito Mussolini. In February 1947 Italy ceded Fiume, now renamed Rijeka, to Yugoslavia. Today the city is part of Croatia. An excellent example of a rare medal. Follow us to receive updates about NEW listings. Antique French 1914 World War One Revanche! Has “bronze” mark which very hard to read. Measurements: Diameter about 49 mm, Weight about 50 grams (about 1.8 oz). Our elves do their best to describe the COLORS they see, given the age of their eyes, and the technical digitization tools at their disposal. HOWEVER, even color is subjective. We recently had someone disagree with our description of’brick red’, despite the fact that bricks DO come in different shades. You might think it’s more purple than blue, but color is subjective, and we all use different scales and sources to judge color Pantone, professional paint charts, etc. We are a small green boutique doing our best to support an entire community of students working their way through college, single moms, old grannies, people recovering from various misfortunes in life, and just trying to figure out how to pay the month’s bills, or put food on the table, or keep a shelter over their head and not become homeless. If you make an offer that is under our wholesale and labor costs, we will decline, because, again, our mission is to create jobs and not destroy them. If you want to support artists and struggling people, and help upcycle, recycle, and keep great items out of the landfill, that’s us! But please don’t ask us to go against our policies and mission. PLEASE HELP US stay in business and creating new jobs by doing this. We truly appreciate your consideration, and thank you for reading this notice. ALSO, a note about discounting – if you feel you need a discount, request your discount when you place your offer. But please discuss all discounts in advance of making your offer. Once we accept your offer, all pricing for invoice purposes are final. Mira- page 464 – 6.27.14. 2/2 – AHG -IP. The item “Antique French 1914 World War One Revanche!
