Somerset Light Infantry’For distinguished services rendered during the course of the campaign. Lieutenant-Colonel Ian Mackintosh’Jan’ Smith, D. Was born in Inverness in January 1884, the son of John Mackintosh Smith, Esq. A tea planter from Ceylon. Educated at Rugby School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he was Commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Somerset Light Infantry, 22.10.1902, and was promoted Lieutenant, 20.5.1905. A talented linguist, he was an interpreter in Turkish and French, and served as Vice-Consul at Adana, Turkey, February to November 1911; and as Vice-Consul at Van, Turkey, whilst seconded to the Foreign Office, October 1913 until the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914. Promoted Captain, 11.8.1914, he served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry on the Western Front from 10.10.1914- reaching the front line on the 27th October he was wounded in the right thigh by a high explosive shell four days later, 31.10.1914. Admitted to General Hospital No. Appointed General Staff Officer, 3rd Grade, to serve as Staff Officer (Intelligence) with G. Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 24.2.1915, he served at Gallipoli, and was Mentioned in Despatches for the Suvla Bay landings (London Gazette 5.11.1915). Subsequently appointed Brigade Major in the 12th Infantry Brigade, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and Egyptian Expeditionary Force, 25.12.1915, he served in this capacity until November 1916, was again Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 1.12.1916), and awarded the Military Cross. Appointed General Staff Officer, 2nd Grade, to serve as Liaison Officer with G. Egyptian Expeditionary Force, 4.11.1916, he was promoted Major, 22.10.1917, was thrice more Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 16.1.1918, 22.1.1919, and 12.1.1920), was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, and an Officer of the Serbian Order of the White Eagle. Appointed temporary Military Attaché at Constantinople, 1.8.1919, in which he would have been in charge of liaising with Australian Military Officers in regards to the searching for lost and missing soldiers on the Gallipoli Peninsula. He remained there for a year before re-joining his old Regiment in Northern Ireland. However, Ireland was not to his liking-’he had not joined the army to be potted at from behind hedges’- and he resigned with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, 29.3.1923. Moving to London, he was employed at Conservative Head Office, before retiring to Co. He died in Belfast, 9.10.1958. Smith was the only Somerset Light Infantry Officer to be awarded the D. And Serbian Order of the White Eagle during the Great War. His military record shows that he was an officer in an artillery 10 division 3rd Belorussian front. He was a commander of division. In his award list, it shows that he was awarded for destroying German armor bunkers, machine gun positions and mine artillery batteries and many Nazi German army soldiers. Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Coronation 1953; Efficiency Decoration, G. 2nd issue, Territorial, silver and silver-gilt, reverse officially dated 1950, with integral top riband bar, mounted as worn, together with the recipients related miniature awards & uniform buttons. London Gazette 2 January 1950: Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Benson Somerville, O. Regional Director, Northern Ireland Region, General Post Office. London Gazette 1 January 1946. Henry Benson Somerville was born in Rangoon, Burma, on the 17. Schooled at King Williams College, Isle of Man. He served as a Territorial Forces during the First World War, listed as a Sergeant with the Liverpool Regiment, being commissioned Second Lieutenant, 1/5. Liverpool Regiment (Service Bn) on 31 October 1917. Arried to Alma Hove in 1921, who died June 1934, aged 42. He was appointed an Assistant Engineer in the Post Office on 16 May 1924, and transferred to the Supplementary Reserve of Officers, Royal Corps of Signals, with the rank of Second Lieutenant, on 10 December 1927. He served with the Royal Corps of Signals during the Second World War, listed as being a Major 3. September 1939 and for his services was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1946 New Years Honours List. Somerville was appointed an Honorary Colonel of a Territorial Army unit on 15 July 1950 and was awarded the Efficiency Decoration that year. The same year he was awarded his C. Being listed in the London Gazette as being Lieutenant Colonel Benson, Regional Director of the Post Office in Northern Ireland, an unusual civilian award for a listed senior officer, perhaps with a connection to the enduring troubles in the region in which Somerville may well have been acting in a security/monitoring role with the G. An outstanding Second World War Hong Kong O. Group of eleven awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel R. Walker, Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, late Royal Engineers, who was wounded in the bitter fighting at the Wong Nai Chung Gap in December 1941, taken prisoner by the Japanese, his fighting spirit and good humour appear to have shone bright during nearly four years of hardship and suffering. Mounted court-style for wear, good very fine and better (11). Reginald David Walker was born in Edinburgh on 23 October 1892 and was educated at the Mathematical School, Rochester, Kent, 1905-07. Dockyard, Chatham, 1907-12, he continued his engineering studies at the Royal College of Science and City and Guilds Engineering College, London, 1912-15. He was a Whitworth Exhibitioner in 1913. A member of the University of London O. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Field Company, 2nd London Divisional Engineers, R. He was subsequently appointed to 522 Field Company, R. In France, where he served in the period September-December 1916 and was advanced to Temporary Lieutenant. It was in the same unit that he went on to witness further active service in Salonika, December 1916-June 1917; in Egypt, June 1917-April 1918 and in Palestine from April 1918 until the end of the War. He was awarded the M. And was demobilized as a Captain. In December 1920 Walker entered the service of the Federated Malay States Government Railway as an Assistant Engineer. In December 1923 he was appointed a District Engineer and he remained with the F. Railways in a variety of engineering posts until 1934 when he moved to Hong Kong. There, in March 1934, he was appointed Acting Manager and Chief Engineer of the Kowloon-Canton Railway and was advanced to Manager and Chief Engineer in August the same year. He was awarded the Jubilee Medal 1935 (Hong Kong Government Gazette 6 May 1935, refers) and the Coronation Medal 1937 (Hong Kong Government Gazette 14 May 1937, refers). His employment as an engineer aside, Walker joined the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps and was a Major in the Railway Operating Cadre with seniority of 1 January 1935. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on 20 August 1940 and was awarded the O. In the following year for his services as Director of War Supplies in Hong Kong. During the Battle for Hong Kong, Lieutenant-Colonel Walker was ordered by General Maltby to take a party of 70 British and Chinese Royal Engineers, in an infantry role, to reinforce the Wong Nai Chung Gap area on the island. It was here, on 19 December 1941, that Walker was wounded by shrapnel and left stranded in No-Mans Land. Luckily, he was recovered by Lieutenant Black and Private Morris of the Canadian Winnipeg Grenadiers. At the fall of Hong Kong on 25 December 1942, Walker became a P. And was held in Argyle Street Camp, Kowloon, Hong Kong. After the war he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (Hong Kong Government Gazette 15 August 1947, refers). Walker held a Diploma from Imperial College, was a Chartered Civil Engineer, a Member of the Institution of Chartered Engineers , a Member of the Institute of Transport, and an Associate of the Royal College of Science, and was the author of a number of technical books on overseas railways. A good Great War D. Group of seven awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel A. Lyttelton, Welsh Regiment, who was decorated for his command of 38th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps in 1917-18: earlier he had served with distinction in the Ypres operations in August-November 1914 and performed the difficult duty of chief prosecutor at a Court Martial for two soldiers of the 2nd Royal Welsh accused of murder – both were found guilty and shot at dawn, an incident related by Robert Graves in his book’Goodbye to All That’. Original court mounted’as worn’ medal bar includes: Distinguished Service Order, G. Silver-gilt and enamel; 1914 Star, with clasp Capt. ; British War and Victory Medals, M. Lyttelton; Jubilee 1935; Defence and War Medals 1939-45. London Gazette 3 June 1919. Archer Geoffrey Jerky Lyttelton was born in May 1884, the son of the Right Rev. Arthur Temple Lyttelton, Bishop of Southampton. Educated at Haileybury and Trinity College, Cambridge, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Welsh Regiment in August 1907, direct from the universitys Volunteer Rifle Corps. He subsequently served as Adjutant 1910-13 and was advanced to Captain in September of the latter year. Lyttelton went to France as a Machine-Gun Officer in 3rd Infantry Brigade in early August 1914 and won a mention in despatches for the Ypres-Armentieres operations (London Gazette 17 February 1915, refers). A stint as a Staff Captain in 3rd Infantry Brigade ensued, during which he had the unpleasant duty of acting as prosecutor at a Court Martial: as a consequence two soldiers of C Company, 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment were found guilty of the murder of their R. Both were sentenced to death and shot at dawn, a story recounted by Robert Graves in Goodbye to All That. Lyttelton next commanded the Brigades M. Company from January to June 1916 and was again mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 15 June 1916, refers). He was also given the brevet rank of Major. Subsequently appointed to the command of 38th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps, in which capacity he served from December 1917 until the wars end, he won the D. And was twice mentioned in despatches (London Gazettes 29 December 1918 and 10 July 1919, refer); he was invested with his D. The King at Buckingham Palace on 12 July 1919. Post-war, he was advanced to Major in the 1st Battalion, Welsh Regiment, in early 1927 and, on his advancement to Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1932, took command the 2nd Battalion in India. Placed on the Retired List in May 1937, Lytellton was recalled on the renewal of hostilities and commanded the Welsh Regiment Infantry Training Centre, and later, the Cardiff Garrison, services that won him a Certificate of Commendation.
