Military Cross, British War Medal and Victory Medal group of 3. The Military Cross is beautifully engraved to. WILLIAMS MESSINES 7 – 5- 17. BWM and Victory Medals named to. Citation for the Military Cross was announced in the Edinburgh Gazette (Supplement) August 20th 1917, page 1681. It reads as follows. (T/Capt) William Arthur Williams. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an attack, he led his company with great courage and determination, capturing and enemy field gun, and at once consolidated his objective. Afterwards he repulsed a strong enemy counter-attack, showing a splendid example of coolness under very heavy shell fire. The Medal Index Card for William Arthur Williams confirms that he began the war as 276 Sergeant in the 6th Liverpool Regiment. Later to be commissioned 2nd / Lieutenant, 9th Liverpool rising to Lieutenant. He was later promoted to Captain attached to the Cheshire Regiment. He won the MC whilst serving with the 11th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. The award is also confirmed in the Battalion War Diary written up at Reclinghem on the 27th June 1917. The War Diary, of which an extract will accompany the medals, details that the 11th Battalion took part in the Attack on Messines Wytschaete Ridge. The intense fighting saw the original strength reduced from 41 Officers and 920 Other Ranks down to 32 Officers and 718 Other Ranks. In this action the Battalion won 1 Bar to a DSO, 5 Military Crosses, 3 Distinguished Conduct Medals and 21 Military Medals. This brings home the sheer intensity of the action. A very nicely toned miniature Military Cross, with pin, is with the group. This comes with his Medal slip (correctly marked). The son’s TEM is named to 922921 GNR.
