A super rare lot, of one only 31 DSM’s given in WWI to US Navy personnel by the US Army This lot comes from the estate group of Captain Asher Carter Baker, USNA 1871 class, served his time, retired and acted as executive of the 1900 Paris Expo, 1915 Panama Pacific Expo and the Sesquicentenniel Expo, during which he died (1926). He was then called out of retirement for WWI due to his expertise with organization and transport matters, which is what his job had been with the Expositions. Baker got the first award of the Legion of Honor for the 1900 Paris Expo: this one with rosette (officer of the legion) is for his WWI service. Was later decorated with the Commander rank neck order, but only this Officer medal (with original Paris marked box and appropriate rosette, plus a rosette for the later commander award) are present in this lot. The DSM or Distinguished Service Medal rim # 439 as shown, WWI issue, fairly early #, full wrap brooch, etc. Is also for this service, which consisted of being transportation coordinator between the US Navy and the AEF, on Pershing’s Staff. See the Hall of Valor for more info on this award. He was also awarded the Navy Cross for this work, but this medal is NOT included in the lot. Medal is in NEAR PERFECT condition, light age only. The Legion has a couple enamel chips as you can see, not bad but present nonetheless. ONLY the Legion of Honor box is included in this lot. From this man’s son, Captain Cecil Sherman Baker, are on here now, and were listed a few days ago. Joined the navy, from what I can tell, after his Princeton Graduation in 1904, his father (Asher Carter Baker) was also in the Navy at this rank during WWI. He was the Great-Great Nephew of General William T. Sherman, descending directly through WT’s sister Mary Elizabeth Sherman and William James Reese… Hence his middle name of Sherman. His career is basically as follows: Great White Fleet USS Vermont, Lt. Commander in the Mexican Campaign, WWI Flag Secretary to Admiral Caperton USS Pittsburgh, 1918 US Navy Commissioner to Chile, 1919 US Navy aide to Brazilian president visiting the US, 1925-28 Lt. Governor and Naval Attache to the US Virgin Islands, 1930′s Staff of Admirals Schofield and Leigh. Letter of Commendation for Meritorious Service 1921 for being Supply Officer to the US Pacific Fleet. He obviously served up to almost WWII or was called out of retirement, as there are signs of his getting the American Defense Medal. LOT INCLUDES: US Navy version of the Mexican Service medal in matching numbered box with original ribbon bar, miniature medals with Mexican Service and WWI Victory with Patrol Bar, miniature ribbon bar for this last one, Numerous ribbon bars with these, as well as Silver Star on each WWI Victory ribbon for the 1921 citation, all mounted in the lid of the jewelry box shown. Also American Defense medal ribbon included in some. Brown leather belt and buckle, showing age, but not rotten, needing leather treatment or shoe polish, several gilt buckles and catches, as shown, misc. Naval buttons of the early style with right facing eagle. The small leather box with his initials on top houses most of this material, the lid of which is going to detach soon but is still held on, albeit by a small part of the leather hinge. Great White Fleet port visitation medals include: 1908 Australia gilt with enamel, small ring for attaching to something, size of a quarter. Japan enamel stick pin of unusually beautiful design, like silver WELCOME US NAVY AFA on back, small US and Japanese flags intertwined with collar holder, about 4 square overall. Enamel Japanese or Chinese stickpin badge with 1908 and mum, WELCOME in its design, enamel piece about size of a quarter to half dollar. Uruguay (I think) stick pin device missing the pin, no other info, 1.75 tall. Silver plated medal larger than a half dollar , in Spanish, dated July 1917 from Buenos Aires, with large flag and National colors ribbon in top and stick pin. Another July 1917 Buenos Aires medal IN ENGLISH with bronze finish and smaller ribbon setup in top. This is a super little lot, all of which came with his father’s stuff, which I have kept. Some notes I made while researching this man are included, and sloppy as they are, they might help with further research. See image and title for any info, and ask any questions you may have! An extremely rare and important group of medals together with a large amount of letters from the front for a Captain in the Kings 1st battalion and subsequently 4th extra reserve battalion of the Kings liverpool battalion who was killed at the Battle of Ypres on 1st May 1915. Captain David Aitken Lumsden’s medals consist of a 1914 star a British war Medal and victory medal. All are correctly named. He is lieutenant on the 1914 star and captain on the victory and war Medal. Captain Lumsden was from Dundee and the letters and telegrams are all addressed to his then girlfriend an Eleanor Lockhart also from Dundee. It is a most poignant story of love and a man vying for the attentions of a Companion in the midst of war. Some of the letters are written on kings liverpool headed notepaper and others are written on paperwork obviously scavenged from wherever the captain could. It gives an amazing insight into both the social etiquette of the time and general day to day life in the war. One letter states “we’ve really got in the neck again, 392 casualties and 190 from my own battalion” Another letter “all my officers have been hit bar one but luckily I haven’t been hit yet” A week after he wrote that he was dead. I have carried out a small amount of quick research via the Internet and found the copy of the paper cutting which is the last photo. I haven’t got a copy but it can be printed or applied for easily enough from the imperial war museum. It states that Captain Lumsden was a colour Sgt in his otc was sent to the front wounded sent home and then sent back out when subsequently he was killed when his commanding officer seeing some men “held up” the commanding office stated he was going to see what was happening, captain Lumsden replied no sir, I will do it. Captain Lumsden stood up and got out of the shell hole and went to the aid of these men when he was shot In the head. An amazing grouping with so much history. You do get a huge insight into captain Lumsden and his funny personality from the letters. You can also see how the longer he spends in the trenches his writing suffers and he says he wishes he could get a wound and go to see his girlfriend but not that he was not enjoying the “show” ie the war. His last contact with home is sadly a hastily written field postcard which shows how short time must have been and how bad thing had become. I wish I could keep the set.
