Queens South Africa Medal 1899 1902 with 6 clasps, BELMONT, MODDER RIVER, DRIEFONTEIN, JOHANNESBURG, DIAMOND HILL & BELFAST. Impressed named 5559 P. King’s South Africa Medal, with date clasps SOUTH AFRICA 1901 &. Medals swing mounted as worn, with pin attachment. Comes with copies service papers, medal rolls & national census. Was born on the 7. June 1875 at Trafalgar Farm, Temple Guiting, Gloucestershire. He originally enlisted into the Royal Artillery on the 12. November 1895 at Bristol, however by the 18. November 1895, he had transferred to the 3. He served with them in England until the 22/9/1899 when the battalion was posted to Gibraltar, however after only 33 days, they were sent to South Africa, where he served 26/10/99 – 6/10/1902. It is possible that he served in WW1. The 1911 census records he was working as a Army pensioner, blast furnace labourer. He died on the 23/3/1954 at 17 Salisbury Rd, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Copy of death entry states’aged 78 – retired furnace labourer’. The 3rd Battalion sailed from Gibraltar in the Ghoorkha on 25th October 1899, and arrived at the Cape about 15th November. Along with the 1st and 2nd Coldstreams and the 1st Scots Guards they composed the 1st or Guards Brigade, under Major General Sir H E Colvile. Battalion Grenadier Guards saw some heavy fight throughout the war, the casualty list for 1899 is particularly long. We list militaria and coins weekly. The BWM/Victory pair are correctly impressed: 613 Pte W. William Callaway was born in about June 1878 in South Melbourne. The 5th QIB QSA medal roll confirms Callaway’s clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. He appears on the AWM’s “Pre First World War Conflicts Nominal Roll” as Gallaway NOT Callaway. When he enlisted for the AIF (at Footscray, Victoria on 15 AUgust 1914) he declared his previous service as 2 years 5th A. 2 years Garrison Artillery. 18 months in South Africa. Offered is a medal group to Sergeant William Edwards, who served in the Boer War & South Africa from May 1900 June 1904 with the 3. Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Whilst in South Africa he was taken prisoner at the battle of’Blood River Poort. He further served during WW1 in France from 27/8/1914 with the 2. King’s South Africa Medal (1901-02) with 2 clasps, SOUTH AFRICA 1901 & SOUTH AFRICA 1902, impressed named 1942 CORPL: W. 1914 Star, with clasp impressed named 1942 L. British War and Victory Medals, impressed named 1942 S. Jubilee Medal 1935, un named as issued & Army Long Service & Good Conduct medal, G. Impressed named 1942 L. The medals are court mounted for display & come with copy service papers, pension records, medal rolls, Medal Index Card, casualty book & 8 pages of extensive research. Was born in Liverpool in January 1880. His occupation is shown as a groom. He enlisted with the 3. C at Gosport on the 23/5/1899. He was given the regimental number of 1942, a number that he served with for the remainder of his army career. He served England 23/5/1899 27/5/00. South Africa 28/5/1900 28/6/1904. January 1903 posted to the 4. 28/3/03 reverted to Pte at own request. 25/6/1907 posted to the Depot (Gosport) promoted to L/Cpl 1/4/1911. Battalion (Reserve depot/training unit). France 27/8/1914 17/10/1914 with the 2. Hospital 1917 at Sheerness due to large hernia Posted back to the 6. 24/9/1918 promoted to Cpl. 25/9/1918 posted to 2. Wounded in action 22/10/1918, (shrapnel wound right foot). C Medal in October 1917. Class Signaller October 1917. William Edwards served in South Africa with the Mounted Infantry Section of the 3rd Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He was captured following Major Hubert Gough’s crossing of the Buffalo River, when, in attempting to surprise 300 Boers who had dismounted at a farm near Blood River Poort, his force was itself surprised, this time by 700 Boers under Louis Botha; the latter’s mounted attack completely swamped Gough’s outnumbered force, resulting in four officers and 19 other ranks killed and two officers and 19 men wounded. A further six officers and 235 men, including William, were captured and stripped of their weapons and most of their clothing. Blood River Poort, 17 September 1901. Boer War & WW1 British Army medal group of 4 to C. Johns, who served in both the Royal Navy and Army, was wounded at Ladysmith and served in France from 1914 during the Great War. Impressed named 2721 PTE C. JOHNS, DEVON: REGT; with Ghost dates, polished to left edge of face ; 1914 Star, impressed named (Numbers obscured as medal is sewn down) PTE C. YORK:R, with clasp; War and Victory Medals, impressed named 9306 SJT. Comes with original Royal Navy Service papers; discharge certificate – West Riding RHA; 2 x discharge certificates – 5th Royal Garrison Regiment; 2 x Devonshire Regiment; 3 x Labour Corps and copies of medal rolls, medal index cards, enlistment papers. Charles Johns was born in Millbrook, Cornwall on the 24/3/1870. After that his date of birth changed each time he enlisted. He enlisted in the Royal Navy on the 14/9/1888. Service number 146412 and served on the H. Agincourt, HMS Aurora in 1889. Enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment on the 27/9/1889, with his date of birth as July 1871. He states his previous service as being with the 4th Devon Regiment and as having previously been rejected from enlistment as Under chest development. He served: 1st Battalion Home 25/9/89-27/1/91. Passed a course Mounted Infantry 1892. Recalled to Army Service 7/10/1899. 2nd Battalion South Africa 20/10/99-19/4/01. Johns C 2721 Private 2nd Bn. Source: Natal Field Force Casualty Roll, page 61, line 6 Devonshire Regiment. QSA Medal roll remarks invalided 27/03/1901. On returning to England, he enlisted in the 5th Royal Garrison Regiment. Transferred to the Royal Berkshire Regiment 3/11/05 in Halifax (Canada). Enlisted in the West Riding Royal Horse Artillery as a Gunner14/10/08 Regimental number 161. He served until October 1912. On the 28/8/1914 he enlisted in the Special Reserve with a Regimental number of 3/9306 posted to the 3rd Battalion West Yorkshire Regt. Posted to the 20th Notts and Derby Regiment. 14/5/17 28th Coy Labour Corps. Discharged 14/5/18 No longer physically fit for war service. Re enlisted labour Corps 29/5/19. The medals and ribbons include Queen’s Sudan Medal, Queen’s South Africa Medal with 3 State clasps, King’s South Africa Medal with 2 clasps, WW1 1914 Star with “5th Aug-22nd Nov 1914″ bar, British War Medal, The Victory Medal and 1897 Khedive’s Sudan Medal with 2 clasps. 1 Queen’s Sudan Medal is in silver and was awarded British and Egyptian forces which took part in the Sudan campaign between 1896 and 1898. No clasps were awarded. Around the rim is the recipient’s information 4229 Pte A. 2 Queen’s South Africa Medal which is also in silver with 3 State clasps- Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony. This medal was awarded to British and Colonial military personnel and civilians employed in official capacity who served in the Second Boer War in South Africa from 11 October 1899 to 31 May 1902. The rim of this medal is noted 4229 PTE A. Bennett 2 Sea Highrs. The Transvaal clasp was awarded to all troops in the South African Republic at any time between 24 May 1900 and 31 May 1902 who had not received a clasp for a specific action. The Orange Free State clasp was awarded to all troops who were in this area between 28 Feb 1900 and 31 May 1902 who had not received a clasp for a specific action in the Orange Free State. Cape Colony clasp was awarded to all troops in the Cape of Good Hope at any time between 11 Oct 1899 and 31 May 1902 who had not received a clasp for a specific action in the Cape of Good Hope or the “Natal” clasp. 3 Kings South Africa Medal in silver with 2 clasps, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. The King’s South Africa medal was awarded to all British and Colonial military personnel who served in the Second Boer War in South Africa and who were in the theatre on or after 1 Jan 1902 and who had completed 18 months of service in the conflict prior to 1 June 1902. This medal was always paired with the Queen’s South Africa medal, it was never awarded singly. Around the rim of the Kings South Africa medal is engraved 4229 Pte A. The “South Africa 1901″ clasp was awarded to all troops who served in S. Africa between 1 Jan. 1901 and 31 Dec. 1901 while the “South Africa 1902″ clasp was awarded to all troops who served in S. 1902 and 31 May 1902. 4 1914 Star medal (Mons Star) and “5thAug-22Nov 1914″ bar both in bronze. The 1914 Star Medal was awarded to those served in a theatre of war during 1914. The “5thAug-22Nov 1914″ bar was awarded to all those who were “under fire” in France or Belgium during those dates. The reverse side of the star is engraved 3/7553 PRT:A. 5 The silver British War Medal which was awarded to a member of the fighting forces who had to leave his native shore in any part of the British Empire while on service. The rim of this medal is engraved 3/7353 PTE. The service number is slightly different on the 1914 Star Medal from the British War Medal for Private Bennett. 6Bronze The Victory Medal which was awarded to all who entered into a theatre of war. The rim on this medal is engraved 3/7353 PTE. HIGHRS The same engraving as noted on the silver War Medal. 7 The silver Khedive’s Sudan Medal (1897) and 2 clasps. This medal was established in 1897 and was awarded by the Khedivate of Egypt for service during the Mahdist War in Sudan. The rim of this medal is engraved 3229 A. BENNETT 1st SEA HIGHRS. Additional photos are available upon request. Total weight of the ribbons, clasps, medals and rear pin is 307 grams. As noted in the photos, the ribbons show some soiling and wear.
