Named medal box – sent to his mother Mrs R Garszynski at 14 Queen Anne’s Grove in Bedford Park, London (Ruth Anna Cornaby had got divorced in 1940 had re-married Jan Garszynski in 1945). Captain Cornaby was second in command of’A’ Squadron of the 7th Light Cavalry. A Japanese officer and a private soldier had been hiding on the roadside. Whilst the tanks were engaging other targets up ahead, a Japanese officer and a private soldier ran out of cover towards Captain Cornaby’s Lee tank. The private was killed by machine gun fire from another tank but the officer managed to climb onto Captain Cornaby’s tank. He killed Cornaby with his sword and he also killed the turret gunner. After Hubert and the turret gunner of the tank had been killed the Japanese officer jumped into the tank and attacked Vernon Jenkins. Trooper Vernon Jenkins was the tank loader on Captain Cornaby’s tank. During the struggle Vernon managed to fire all six rounds of his revolver into the Japanese officer and three more rounds from another revolver he managed to grab before the officer fell down dead. Jenkins was awarded the military medal for bravery for his actions in killing the Japanese officer. The katana sword that killed Hubert is one of the star items and treasures of the Scotts Dragoon Guards Museum in Edinburgh and it can be seen on their website. The sword was donated to the museum by Trooper Vernon Jenkins. Details of the attack and death of Captain Hubert Cornaby are included in the book’Tank Tracks to Rangoon by Bryan Perrett’. This group came to me exactly as you see it, in this very old and attractive leather case maybe crocodile skin? It contains the medals, beret, books, photos, letters and docs to 7904215 Pte Horace Turner RAC. His red Army Service book has been censored and shows him as enlisted on 12/10/40. His red driving licence is also from 1940 , Catterick. There are lots of photos and docs that seen to relate to North Africa so he was a Desert Rat I guess! You can see his service from his medal group. The black beret was his and is in good shape, dated 1942 and must be the one in the photo! The docs are wartime dated and the leaflet of Hitler is hilarious! The’Tobruk Truth’ document will need taping back together. The grey book on the 7th Armd Div has an inscription inside from’A Sqn, 1st Royal Tanks. Overall, a lovely’time capsule’ to this soldier. Complete World War Two Medal Group to a Lance. From the 2nd Armoured. Welsh Guards (Guards Armoured Division Reconnaissance and Scouting) who was killed in action. The medals were awarded to 2737430 Lance. Henry Leonard Green came from Bristol and he served with the 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards which formed the Guards Armoured Division Reconnaissance and Scouting – and who was killed in action on 1st September 1944 during the fighting around the town of Arras. He is buried in the London Cemetery and Extension in Longeuval in the Somme region. There is another Welsh Guardsman and several members of the Royal Armoured Corps and the Reconnaissance Corps (Royal Armoured Corps) who were killed in action on this date. This was just before the 100 mile in one day advance when the battalion was the first unit to liberate Brussels on 3rd September 1944. The 2nd Armoured Battalion Welsh Guards were part of the 6th Guards Armoured Brigade and they were the leading battalion of the Guards Armoured. The 2nd Battalion Welsh Guards was originally an infantry unit but later converted to an armoured role, becoming the divisional scouting and reconnaissance unit of the Guards Armoured Division. This division landed in France on 29 June 1944 and fought its way across North West Europe. It participated in many of the Normandy breakout battles, Operation Market Garden, the advance on and subsequent crossing of the Rhine and the drive into Germany itself. They were equipped with Cromwell and Stuart Tanks. I have attached a photo showing some of the men of the battalion with their Cromwell Tank in June 1944 above. The group includes the original medal box sent to his father, the medal slip insert confirming his name and service number and the award of the 4 medals, the defence medal, war medal, 1939-45 star and the France and Germany Star. The medals include their original envelope packets. The box, slip and medals are all in very good condition. The medals have rarely been taken out of their packets and are in mint condition.
