Second World War Medal Group of 6 to Private James Andrew Jaftha – 6. Armoured Division Reserve Armoured Regiment, Late Imperial Light Horse/Kimberly Regiment. 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, British War Medal, African Service Medal C320209 J. Mounted as worn, very fine (6). Was born on the 24. July 1907 and was living at 1. Avenue, Claremount, Cape, South Africa when he enlisted into the South African army on the 10. He served in the infantry with the Imperial Light Horse/Kimberley Regiment which was part of the newly formed 11th South African Armoured Brigade, 6. South African Armoured Division. In early April 1944 Private Jaftha transferred to the Reserve Armoured Regiment, South African Armoured Corps, 6. South African Armoured Division with whom he entered the Italian theatre of war with in late April 1944. At the end of January 1945 he was transferred to the Reserve Motorised Battalion, 6. The 6th South African Armoured Division was the second armoured division of the South African Army and was formed during World War II. The division was initially transferred to Egypt for training, after which it served in the Allied campaign in Italy during 1944 and 1945. In Italy, the division was initially deployed as part of the British Eighth Army, under command of Lieutenant-General Oliver Leese, and was then transferred to the U. Fifth Army, under Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark, for the remainder of the Italian Campaign. The division operated as a strongly reinforced division and was frequently used to spearhead the advance of the Corps and Army to which it was attached. A brilliant history of the 6. The Medal was instituted on 29 December 1946 to be awarded for two years’ aggregate service between 6 September 1939 and 15 February 1946 in voluntary unpaid service in an approved organisation, such as the Red Cross of South Africa. Members of the Armed Forces did not qualify, nor did those already awarded the Africa Service Medal. In the event, only about 17,500 medals were awarded in all and it is not often found. WW2 South African potential casualty medal group to Warrant Officer E. Ansell, Imperial Light Horse and South African Armoured Corps, comprising of. John Chard Decoration numbered 27 and privately engraved to W. 1939-45 Star named to 31345 E. Africa Star with 8. Army Clasp named to 31345 E. Italy Star named to 31345 E. 1939-45 Defence Medal named to 31345 E. 1939-45 War Medal named to 31345 E. South Africa Service Medal – named to 31345 E. 1953 Coronation Medal privately engraved to E. Territorial Efficiency Medal, South African Type, with Clasp engraved to No. JCD awarded in 1955, Efficiency medal awarded in 1943 and issued in 45, clasp also confirmed in 1945 and awarded in 1947. Ancell began his career in 1932, joining the 1. Imperial Light Horse as a Private. Served from 1932 to 40 with the 1. Imperial Light Horse, then the 2. ILH for 3 months in 1940, before returning to the 1. In the middle of the same year. He served with the 1. Until 1942 when we transferred to the 6. He continued to serve with them until 1946. His service must have continued beyond then as he received the John Chard Decoration in 1955 and is shown in a publication as a CSM in 1949. He also received the 1953 Coronation Medal (confirmed). Believed to have been wounded in June 1944, taking a gunshot wound to the left side of his face and hand, however, there is only a written note to this effect and no evidence is provided to support this.
