Soviet Sniper of RKKA (Red Army) badge, 1938 1942 issue. This is GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL Soviet award to a sniper for excellent performance from early WW2 period NOT a replica or post-war reissue! The badge is very well-made, in silver-plated brass and high quality hot baked enamels. It measures 44.2 mm in height x 37.1 mm in width. The badge is in GREAT condition. The obverse is very well preserved. The red enamel on the star and plaque shows age but it is essentially perfect having only minimal rubbing and some microscopic contact marks, no chips, flaking or other significant damage. The white enamel is even better preserved: it has some manufacturing imperfections, but no noticeable wear, and shows beautiful luster. All the enamel on this piece is 100% ORIGINAL there are no enamel repairs that we often find on other pieces from the period. The details of the soldier and wreath are nice and crisp, and the original silver finish is almost completely intact having only minimal wear to the high points. The silver plating on the reverse is almost pristine. The screw post is ORIGINAL to the badge although it has been repaired at some point (the repair was done very professionally by laser, so it did not overheat the badge, did not lead to enamel loss, and is almost unnoticeable even to a trained eye). The maker marked screw plate is of the period and fits perfectly. The badge was manufactured between 1938 – July 1941 (the production seized soon after the German invasion of the Soviet Union). The remaining stock was being issued until mid-1942 at which point the badge was replaced by the Sniper Badge of the new “Proficiency” series. Unlike many other sharp shooting badges, this was a strictly military award rather than an OSOAVIAKhIM paramilitary issue. The letters “PKKA” (RKKA) stand for “Workers and Peasants Red Army”.
